Everything's connected. Especially the eyes and the brain. Protecting your pet's eyes protects their brain which leads to longer healthspan. Here's how to do it through whole foods.
The macula is located in the center of the retina, at the back of the eye. It is a small, oval-shaped area that is responsible for central vision, allowing our pets and us to see sharp details (like squirrel eyelashes and fine print).
The density of this pigment is related to cognitive health. The more dense it is, the faster our reaction times, the better our spatial anticipatory skills (estimating the arrival of a stimulus at a target location moving at varying velocity), and the better our balance. Think about the timing and coordination a dog needs to catch a frisbee, or a cat uses to stalk and pounce, and you get the picture.
Reduced processing speed is a central feature of cognitive decline.
Well guess what gives the macula its density?
Lutein and zeaxanthin. Two carotenoids found abundantly in kale, spinach, Swiss chard, broccoli, carrots, sweet potato as well as eggs. It also turns out that these carotenoids are more bioavailable in cooked vegetables than raw ones. And since they are fat soluble, they are best absorbed by consuming in whole food form in meals containing some fats. ๐ฅฌ๐ฅฆ๐ฅ
Lutein and zeaxanthin act as a natural filter, protecting the eye from about 90% of harmful blue and ultraviolet light. They also act as powerful antioxidants. How does this correlate to brain health?
The brain (which is about 60% fat) takes up more lutein than any other phytochemical. In the brain, these two carotenoids are thought to help protect the integrity of white matter, contribute to remyelination (i.e. regeneration of the protective layer around nerve fibers), and reduce oxidative stress and inflammation.
Goodness Gracious foods for dogs and cats offer the best of both worlds. They're rich in lutein and zeaxanthin from dark leafy and cruciferous greens, orange root vegetables and eggs, while ranking among the highest protein levels you'll find across all foods - raw to cooked. (They're also synthetic free and low glycemic.) ๐๐
So try some more Goodness Gracious foods in your rotation for healthy eyes and brain. ๐๐ง ๐พ

Cancer prevention grows in our gardens. Studies show kale, cabbage, Brussel sprouts and broccoli sprouts contain compounds that could epigenetically eliminate cancer as a life threatening disease. Today, one in two dogs over 10 get cancer. A powerful reason is that leafy and cruciferous greens comprise less than 0.1% of commercial pet food.

"Give a handful of treats to the pet you love, and a heart full of hope to another in need."
We believe in helping all less fortunate animals by providing for the health and wellbeing of all fortunate dogs and cats. We focus on giving back to the shelters and rescues in communities where our products are sold.
Amy Renz, our Pack Leader, spent more than fifteen years focused exclusively in the high-pressure, high-speed, high-tech world before the single moment when Gracie changed her life. It was one of those first kiss moments when your heart flutters and you are never the same. Now she runs a successful, benevolent business that takes care of our lovable, loyal followers first.
Grace and Lula are our inspiration and Official Tasters. They are named in loving memory of Amyโs grandmothers - who would absolutely get a kick out of that! Gracieโs favorite cookie is our peanut butter banana. Lula's is of course the Hula Lula's (and chicken if you're curious.) Our pack has now expanded to include Mae - a little "sidewalk special" - rescued from Georgia, and the occasional foster needing love while forever is found.
Our advisory board is a panel of experts. We have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with her degree from Michigan Stateโs renowned program and her undergraduate degree from Tufts; she's brilliant. We have a financial and operational expert with over 40 years of experience most recently running a multi-billion dollar international corporation; a creative expert who raised and loved dogs all her life; and a small business owner and community steward who built a profitable million dollar business within the span of one community, five miles long.
