For those of you not afforded the luxury of sleeping in on a Sunday, let’s have story time with our coffee, shall we?

A few days ago, we received an application for our little flight risk friend, Beau the Bassett. Let’s call the applicant K. K doesn’t have another dog in the home, or a fence, so was told it’s not a good fit and offered other dogs.

Not long after, we received another app for Beau. Let’s call this applicant G. G is the spouse to K, and suddenly they have another dog, as well as an invisible fence. G also included a nice comment at the bottom of the app saying that we cannot deny them for not having a fence, and cannot deny them not having a companion dog. I mean, clearly we can- but anyway.

During this time, I emailed K to clarify if there was another dog, and perhaps not listing it was an oversight? K says yes- the dog belongs to another family member and they watch it.

At this point- we are not giving K or G, any dog- let alone our little flight risk friend here.

And then things- get weird. Suddenly K is very angry, and is accusing us of denying them when K already has an application on file with another rescue, that K swears is for this very same dog. K begins sending email correspondence between K and the other rescue, which clearly has nothing to do with anything. K contacts the Bassett rescue to tell them we have their dog. (We do not have their dog) K wanted to adopt him back in February from the other rescue, but was late applying and he already was adopted. I explained this isn’t the same dog, and that K is confused, and we are not affiliated with that organization. Well- apparently now we are lying, and K is very upset that we won’t give K the dog, after he apparently was returned to the other rescue in June, even though he has been in our care since March. Does your head hurt yet?

So anyway- it’s our fault that no one wants to adopt dogs, because we are shady and deceitful, and we, and I quote- “have ruined our desire to adopt at all -- and I reported to Petfinder for your seriously harmful tactics to the persons who after all make a loving home for pets possible” 🫠

The moral of this story is- the public is crazy, and I’m tired of animal welfare volunteers being treated like dirt.

Happy Sunday. I’ll be very busy today stealing dogs and lying to folks on Petfinder and being as shady and deceitful as possible. Have a great day everyone!

Before You Rehome Your Dog, Think About Where They Could End Up

Please think very carefully before deciding your dog is better off with someone else.

Recently, a dog was given away to a new owner. That person then took her to a full pound and surrendered her.

When an owner surrenders a dog to a pound, there is no stray hold. There is no waiting for an owner to come looking. And at a full pound, an owner-surrendered dog is the first euthanized.

The people who surrendered this dog were told that. They knew the pound was full. They knew what could happen to her. And they still left her there.

So before you decide your dog is better off with someone else, think really hard about where the dog who loves you more than anything could end up and if you can live with that.

Because once you hand that responsibility to someone else, you have no say where your dog goes next.

If you absolutely must find your dog a new home, make sure it’s actually a safe one.

That means:

* Checking vet references to confirm they have a history of responsible pet care
* Asking for a rehoming fee so the dog is not seen as “free” or disposable
* Talking to their friends and family to understand their situation and stability
* Asking lots of questions about their lifestyle, home environment and experience with dogs
* Making sure they are truly a good fit, not just a convenient option

Before you hand them over, be damn sure you’re not handing them a death sentence.
