Some friendships are bigger than words can ever explain. They’re built over a lifetime of early mornings, cold mornings in the duck blind, muddy boots, retrievers breaking through the water, countless stories, endless laughter, and memories that become a part of who you are. Today, we lost one of those friendships, and our hearts are broken in a way words will never fully be able to express.
This morning, Chris lost his best friend, George King, a brother in every sense of the word, and someone who was woven into so many chapters of his life. They didn’t just hunt together. They did life together. Through the good times, the hard times, the long days in the field, and the quiet moments in between, they shared a bond that only a lifetime of friendship can build. Some of the best memories aren’t found in photographs or written down in stories. They live in the moments two friends shared, the laughs nobody else understood, and the memories that will be carried for the rest of a lifetime.
At Webb Footed Kennels, George was so much more than a friend to us. We had the privilege of training many great Golden Retrievers for him, watching those dogs grow into hunting partners, and sharing more duck hunts than we could ever begin to count. We shared cold mornings, beautiful retrieves, limits of ducks, and the kind of memories that make you wish you could go back and live just one more day. Those moments mean more to us now than they ever could have before.
But George’s impact reached far beyond the duck blind. To Kristen and Clay, he was an uncle and a mentor. He was someone they looked up to, learned from, and were blessed to have in their lives. To Janet, he was family. He was part of the life they built, the memories they made, and the countless stories that will forever be told around their table. George was loved by so many, and anyone who knew him understands that the world is a little quieter today without him in it.
There is something especially heartbreaking about losing someone who was supposed to be there for all the hunts still left to hunt, all the dogs still left to train, all the stories still left to tell, and all the seasons still left to share. It’s hard to imagine a sunrise over the timber without thinking of him, or a cold morning in the blind without wishing he were there. The hardest part of losing someone you love is realizing that life will keep moving forward, but a part of your heart will always be back in those moments you shared together.
We know that every duck season from here on out will carry a little more weight. There will be mornings when the sky turns gray, the decoys hit the water, and the dogs settle into the blind when we will think of George. There will be stories that start with, “Remember that time…” and end with a smile through the tears. And there will always be a place for him in every memory made in the outdoors, because the people we love never truly leave the places where they left their mark.
A man can be measured in many ways, but perhaps the greatest measure of a life is the love he leaves behind, the people he shaped, the friendships he built, and the memories that continue to bring people together long after he is gone. By that measure, George leaves behind an incredible legacy.
From Chris, Janet, Kristen, Clay, and everyone at Webb Footed Kennels, thank you, George, for the friendship, the lessons, the laughter, the hunts, the dogs, and the memories. Thank you for being family. Thank you for being the kind of friend people are lucky to find even once in a lifetime. We would give anything for one more hunt, one more morning in the blind, one more retrieve, and one more chance to tell you how much you meant to us.
Until we meet again, may there be flooded timber, a sky full of mallards, a good dog by your side, and one more sunrise over the water. You were loved here, George. You will be missed here. And you will never be forgotten.
Rest easy, our friend. The blind will never be quite the same without you. 🦆🤎
