In acknowledgement of veterinary technicians week I want to give a big shout out to Randie Dugger, the best equine veterinary technician in Arkansas. Randie’s clinical and critical thinking skills are off the charts but her wonderful personality and compassion are her truest treasures.
Randie does so many things within our practice outside of clinical medicine and surgery she practically does the work of two technicians.
Above everything, Randie is one of my dearest friends and we are very fortunate to have her in our practice and we look forward to many more years with her.

2 year old TB with a carpal chip fracture off of the distolateral aspect of the radius within the radiocarpal (RC) joint (upper joint of the knee).

This is a common carpal (knee) injury in racing Thoroughbreds and quarter horses.

Biomechanically the RC joint is quite interesting from the standpoint that it is not only a hinge joint but also has gliding properties.
The complex intercarpal ligaments keep the joint anatomically sustained yet allows this complex range of motion to occur.

The non displaced chip fracture is easily visualized in the pre operative radiograph and a post operative radiograph is also provided.

The still images and videos represent the normal progression of an arthroscopic procedure within a carpal joint. The joint is continuously distended throughout the procedure with sterile balanced fluids such as Lactated Ringers Solution. The desired pressure for joint distention is maintained by an automated fluid pump system.

We are excited about Randie’s appearance in the Equinosis publication, Eye On Objectivity. Randie is featured for her accomplishment of achieving certification in objective lameness measurement using the Equinosis Q lameness locator.
Randie is the first and only technician in Arkansas to achieve this status. The certification program not only requires mastering the technical use of the instrument but also an in depth understanding of the biomechanics of equine lameness.
We’re proud of our girl!

3 year old Quarter Horse

Tooth root abscess at the apex of of the 306 (2nd lower left premolar) with a draining tract at the ventral aspect of the mandible.
Intraoral exam was unremarkable.
Radiographs show boney lysis involving the apical tooth roots of the 306.
It is also evident that the probe placed through the draining track in the left ventral mandible enters the distal root of the 306.

The diseased tooth was compromised to the point that endodontics (root canal) was not a viable alternative. Oral extraction of the tooth along with curettage of the draining tract through the mandible into the alveolus was the treatment of choice followed by packing of the upper third of the alveolus with dental impression material.
