Young Wildlife: If You Care, Leave It There.

May is the time of year when many species are raising their young. While it may be tempting to intervene and “rescue” a wild animal found alone, know that many species naturally leave their young alone for long periods of time. In other instances, an adult is likely out of sight close by, waiting for you to leave.

The best thing you can do for young wildlife is to leave them alone. Human interference often causes more harm than good, and in some cases, results in adult wildlife abandoning their young.

***If an animal is obviously orphaned, injured, or in immediate danger, be sure to consult the DEEP website for a contact list of licensed wildlife rehabilitators before taking any action.

⛔️ Not a tick bite
⛔️ Not ringworm
✅ These are just fly bites! We see them every summer and they are nothing to worry about. 😊

Black Fly season is in FULL SWING🎯🪰
Reminder:

These flies are small but pack a big punch (and are related to mosquitos!) Most often these fly bites occur on the stomach/groin/inner thigh and any other palace that may have thin or no fur. They can appear as bright red circular lesions on the skin. While they start as red rings then will often then fill in to be round red circles. These are not typically itchy and will resolve on their own within a few days.

People frequently are worried these are a lyme diseae bulls-eye or ringworm but these are black fly bites and are very common in the spring and summer.

If you have any concerns or you think there is something else going on (red spots on the skin but they look different, are changing size or are continuing to erupt) please always give us a call.

Most of the time, baby birds found on the ground just need a little safe space while they learn how to fly… rarely do they need to be “rescued.” If you care, leave them there… don’t be a kidnapper!

Oh no! You’ve found a baby bird on the ground, apparently alone and in distress. 🐥 Its tiny chirps may pull at your heartstrings, and it can be tempting to spring into action—but, not all baby birds need rescuing. That's why it's so important to stop and assess the situation.

If they do need your help, how to help them depends on a few factors: does this bird need immediate medical attention? And is it a nestling or a fledgling? Take a look at this graphic to determine how and when to assist baby birds—then click the link in our comments to learn more!
