The First 19

As anyone with a passing interest in American Quarter Horses knows, the first permanent registration number went to Wimpy, a King Ranch stallion whose bronze statue welcomes visitors to AQHA headquarters in Amarillo. No. 1 had been reserved for the grand champion Quarter Horse stallion at the 1941 Fort Worth Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show. But at its very first meeting, the AQHA Executive Committee also set aside the next 18 numbers for specially selected stallions, deemed most representative of the ideal-type Quarter Horse.

Many of their names won’t be familiar – like Whiskaway, Columbus and Colonel – but their histories are fascinating, and for this story in its November-December issue, The American Quarter Horse Journal has sought out some amazing historical photos of our breed’s founding fathers.
