Just a reminder, if you don’t know how to cape an animal for a shoulder mount there are a ton of videos on YouTube. It’s well worth taking the time to watch and know what to do before going full throttle samurai mode. Can you see a difference with these??? The Jeffrey Dahmered cape is a no go while the other was caped perfectly. It’s an expensive mistake as a replacement cape doesn’t come free.

One of my fav customers, Carlos Buezo, (such a great dude) told me about a mount he had done a while back and wasn’t happy with it at all. He brought that mount to me and I almost hit the ground. How anyone can give back someone’s trophy and actually accept money for atrocious work is beyond me. I felt horrible for Carlos and assured him his trophy would absolutely “come back to life”… and it did! Thank you Carlos for your continued trust in me with your trophies and especially our friendship.

With today’s newer forms on the market the days of cutting the “circle cut” at the sternum are long gone. For a cape to work well the circle cut has to go down to damn near the legs. The inevitable “I left you plenty of cape to work with…” (when the brisket was shredded) doesn’t just mean the back of the cape. The brisket area or underneath area, is just as important to not cut into. If a hunter does not want to cape the deer for a shoulder mount but will “gut” the deer make sure you stop the cut just past the back legs and then “tube” the cape down like a sock. I know it’s a pain in the ace and you want to cut up to the throat as it makes gutting the deer a lot easier BUT when this is done there’s a tremendous amount of sewing involved and most taxi’s do not do a ton of sewing free of charge. I saw this diagram and added to it to show how far down the circle cut really needs to be. Posting this because taxi’s run into this problem a lot. Hope this helps and happy hunting!
Be safe out there!
