A tiny fly can cause a very big problem.

The New World Screwworm is a parasite whose larvae (maggots) can invade and feed on living tissue through even the smallest wound. While it was eradicated from the United States decades ago, recent detections in parts of the Americas remind us why vigilance matters.

🐕 Check your dog regularly for:
• Cuts, scrapes, or wounds
• Excessive licking or chewing at one area
• Swelling or drainage
• Foul odors from a wound
• Signs of pain or discomfort

💦 🐾 Water Safety Starts w/ Awareness! 🐾💦

Golden Retrievers and water go together like sunshine and summer. But not every pond, lake or slow-moving stream is safe. 🌿⚠️

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can be extremely dangerous, and even a quick swim or drink can lead to serious illness.

Before your next adventure:

✅ Check the water for green scum, mats, or discoloration
✅ Keep your Golden from drinking questionable water
✅ Rinse them off after swimming
✅ When in doubt, choose another spot to splash! 🏖️

Our Goldens trust us to keep them safe. A few extra minutes of caution can help ensure many more happy swims, wagging tails and muddy paw prints ahead. 🐕💛

1. Position yourself behind your dog and wrap your arms securely around their midsection, right beneath the rib cage.

2. Form a firm fist with one hand, cup the other hand over it, and deliver five quick, upward thrusts into the soft area of the belly.

3. Check the mouth after each cycle of thrusts to see if the blockage has shifted enough to be retrieved carefully by hand.

Doing these motions with precision keeps the force directed toward the diaphragm, which is necessary to push air through the windpipe and dislodge foreign objects.
