Wishing you a productive week from us at Onyx Canine🐶

As you head into the week, a quick reminder: consistency is key when it comes to dog training. Even just 5–10 minutes a day of focused practice can make a big difference over time.

Whether you’re reinforcing basic obedience or working through behavior challenges, stay patient and clear in your communication. Your dog is always learning — make sure you’re guiding that learning in the right direction.

Have a great week, and keep up the good work with your pups!

Let’s talk about long term training programs, otherwise known as our Onyx Programs.

These are specialized programs that are specifically customized by us here at Onyx Canine and you as the dog owner/family to ensure we are meeting the needs of you and your dog. These programs take substantially longer and are used for service and sport training, or for families who have special cases of behavioral issues that they need addressed.

These programs allow us to really get to know your dog and how they learn. It also gives the opportunity to get them adjusted into “family life” while in our care.

While these programs aren’t for everyone, they are for some and we love to get to spend extra time with some of these dogs.

We hope everyone has a happy and safe 4th!

🔥 Hot pavement can burn your dog’s paws! 🐾

If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet.

Here’s how to protect your pup this summer:

1️⃣ Use the 7-second rule: Place the back of your hand on the pavement—if it’s too hot after 7 seconds, skip the walk.
2️⃣ Walk early or late: Go out in the morning or evening when temps are cooler.
3️⃣ Stick to grass or shaded paths whenever possible.
4️⃣Watch for signs of burns: limping, licking paws, or red/raw pads = time for a vet visit.

🎇 Tis the season for FIREWORKS 🎆

Here are a few tips to help get your dog through the next few weeks of loud and unpredictable fireworks.

1️⃣ Put your dog in a familiar and safe place. As always, we recommend a crate.
2️⃣ Cover their crate with a blanket to block lights and dampen sound
3️⃣ If you are home and your dog can be supervised, give them a long-lasting chew or frozen treat to distract them.
4️⃣ Ensure your dog is let outside on a leash and collar.
5️⃣ Stay home if possible—your presence alone can be comforting

We love this season but it can be a stressful time for your dogs. Make sure to keep them in mind as you begin your celebrations!

We love to love on your dogs 🐕

Training doesn’t always look as structured as we make it seem on social media… Don’t get me wrong, the key to success is training is consistency both in the training room as well as once the dog is home with their family, but sometimes dog just need to be dogs.

We want respect from our dogs, but we also need connection with them emotionally. And that happens in training as well.

Balance is key.

Why “Sit” Is More Than Just a Trick

Teaching your dog to “sit” isn’t just for show — it’s one of the most useful commands you can teach!
Here’s why:
✅ Builds impulse control
✅ Helps redirect jumping or barking
✅ Creates calm before meals, walks, or greetings

🎯 How to Teach It:
1️⃣ Hold a treat close to your dog’s nose
2️⃣ Slowly raise it above their head — their nose will follow, and their bottom will lower
3️⃣ The moment they sit, say “Yes!” (or use a clicker) and give the treat
4️⃣ Repeat a few times, then add the word “Sit” right before you lure them

Here is the kicker-your dog shouldn’t move from sit until they are given their “release” command. At Onyx Canine we use “free”.

🔁 Practice in short sessions and in different places for best results! Consistency + patience = success 🐶✨

Training is about communication, not control. Start simple, stay consistent, and always make it fun! 💬🦴

Tis the season for family vacations!!

🚗🐾 Traveling with Your Dog? Safety First! 🐶✈️

We almost always travel with at least one our our dogs and we’ve learned a lot on some long road trips with them!

✅ Top Travel Tips for Dog Owners:

🔒 Crate = Safety. A properly-sized, crash-tested crate keeps your dog protected during sudden stops or accidents. It’s the safest way for them to travel in the car. Training your dog to love their crate makes travel easier and safer for both of you.

🎒 Pack Smart. Bring water, a bowl, leash, p**p bags, your dog’s food, and any meds they need.

🚙 Plan Breaks. Just like us, dogs need to stretch, potty, and refresh. Aim for a break every 2-3 hours.

🌡️ Never Leave Them in the Car. Even a few minutes in the sun can be dangerous — always keep your dog with you or leave them home if you can’t.

🏖️ Taking your dog to the beach? Make sure they get a good rinse immediately following their time on the sand and in the salt water. This helps to avoid skin irritation that may be difficult to see due to their fur.

Happy traveling!!

🐾 Why Dog Training Should Be a Family Affair 🐾

Training your dog isn’t just about commands—it’s about communication, consistency, and connection. And the best way to build that? Involve the whole family! 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🐶

Here’s why family participation matters:
✅ Consistency: When everyone is on the same page, your dog learns faster and with less confusion.
✅ Bonding: Shared experiences build trust—not just between dog and human, but between family members too!
✅ Confidence: Kids learn responsibility and empathy while growing more confident in their interactions with your pup.
✅ Fun: Training can (and should!) be fun. Think games, treats, and tail wags for everyone involved.

A well-trained dog is a joy to live with—and that joy multiplies when the whole family is part of the journey. 🐕💛

Calling all overstimulated parents!

If you have a dog you know that your dog seems to become just a *little* annoying after the arrival of a baby. There is excessive barking, loud paws on the floor, picking up tiny pieces of dog food, the excitement the dog has when you get home and the list could go on and on.

So, what do you do about this new found *annoyance* you might feel towards your dog? You train them. Seriously. You owe it to your dog and yourself to provide you dog with the mental and physical outlet of training and manners.

Your dog remains a vital piece of your family and probably gets most of its pets and attention after the kids are asleep. Train. Them.

Give them the opportunity to be a part of your entire world and watch as part of your overstimulation begins to fade.

We have been there. We’ve seen it in our own home and in many others. Train. Your. Dog.

We are fortunate to have clients from all over the United States. Recently one of our graduates took their first flight back home after training. Lucky flew from Kentucky to Massachusetts with no issues at all according to his handler. The hustle and bustle in an airport truly puts training to the test. If we trained your pup, and you live out of state, comment your state below. Massachusetts is a new one for our list!
