Mr. Pudge won puppy pointer! At 10 months old, Pudge is starting to put the pieces together! We had some hiccups in the field, but he ended his run with a double retrieve! Proud of how far he has come and look forward to where he will go in his tournament hunting career!

The process of building a steady dog in the field takes patience, consistency, and clear communication.

▪️We start with a belly collar so we can use less pressure to get our point across. Beginning with stimulation on the stomach allows the dog to understand what we’re asking without immediately going to the neck. Once they clearly understand the expectation, we transfer the cue to the neck collar.

▪️This reinforcement helps keep their feet still and their mind focused. A steady dog must learn that once they’re on point, movement is not an option.

▪️They have to stay patient and composed until we produce the bird. That steadiness — feet planted, intensity high, waiting for the flush — is what separates a good dog from a great one.

Gemma showing off her solid “Place” command! 👏🐾

The place command teaches a dog to go to a designated object, get up on it, and stay there until released. It’s about control, patience, and focus — and Gemma nailed it!

This command is incredibly versatile. In the field, it can mean holding steady during duck and goose hunts. At home, it can be as simple as going to a dog bed in the living room to stay out of the way when things get busy.

From the blind to the living room, a strong “place” command builds discipline and reliability. Way to go, Gemma! 💪✨
