Meet Pearl…Pearl is a 2 year old female who came to me 1 month ago with zero training. She’s from an FC AFC X MH breeding. She has a high drive personality, but had no obedience (couldn’t be let off a leash without concerns of her not returning promptly)…and her retrieving skills were zero. How does a high-drive retriever have no retrieving skills? That drive had been channeled into goofing around at her leisure rather than retrieving. So, my original task was obedience…she’s stellar: walks at heel perfectly off lead, returns to me promptly from anywhere doing anything, and sits steady for hand thrown objects (yes, she will go get an object a couple times then off to other things).
Seeing that obedience is firmly in hand I approached her owner about the possibility of her being a hunting dog. He affirmed that would be a huge plus. So, I began the formal force fetch procedures. So, I needed to flip the script to channel her drive toward retrieving rather than playing.
She has been a challenging but not impossible student. I have diligently and patiently worked for two weeks establishing a proper hold (moving up and down the table too). I do not introduce force to establish an understanding of the fetch command, however, and she would not fetch (had to open her mouth and present the bumper for her to hold). Before I overlay pressure on a command I want the student to actually understand the command 🤷♂️. This Saturday she demonstrated she understands fetch by readily taking a pheasant from me at a front finish sit position while I told her fetch.
This video is only three sessions worth of overlaying pressure to the fetch command via the e-collar on a 12 setting. A 12 setting is 1/10th the maximum setting on a Dogtra collar…darn near imperceptible. But, in her case absolutely the right setting.
Now, she is fetching on command with no collar pressure (3 sessions mind you). But, this is only the start of the fetch program. Up until now I h

Getting in some live fire work for the young crew. Captain was pumped. But, he kinda held it together. Vince tried to get the clay thrower when we relocated it. He was seriously going to fetch the whole unit!
Red was cool.
Next installment with Pearl…in less than a week she’s steady from a side sit for marks. She’s not fully engaged on the retrieve…it’s hit or miss right now. She’s still figuring out smells and such around here. But, through continued work she will be just fine. Just goes to demonstrate that it doesn’t take 6 months and harsh corrections to steady a dog…even a high drive dog. They just need to know the procedures and trust you as the handler. Consistency and clearly defined parameters are key.
This is literally a daylight to dark transition. Pearl is my new trainee. She came in Saturday completely out of control. Pulling on the lead incessantly, no idea what obedience was, no respect for me or anyone else really. Not a slight against her owner…just what happens when a high-drive dog is not structured.
My standard is absolute manners in the kennel. That’s where everything begins…and nothing else goes on until a proper pack-order is established.
After one great pinch collar session that started out like a scene from Gator boys 😜, a de-bolting and here e-collar session on very low stimulation, and another pinch collar session I added in the e-collar to sit. I established a front finish sit then return to heel via the pinch collar. What you see here is just how effective using the right tools, the right order, a clear presentation of what my standards are, and a compliant/smart dog can be.
We can get to work now that she isn’t a rogue!
First winger marks for Bobby. He’s not steady for this kind of mark yet. But, he will get there. He can mark…has a water entry too!
Another installment of how to build balance around water while continuing to elevate the trainee’s skills. This evening Captain learned a new leg of the pattern field. To date he has only had the channel part of the field in terms of water. Now, I am incorporating running by the first bigger cove of water, backsiding the point-base, and skinny-ing in the last cove of water. Notice his enthusiasm (😂) as always. But, more so…notice how once he gets past the point he intentionally angles in the water.
We will incorporate the first body of water including a re-entry off the island next leg. Then it’s a matter of go by, then get in…or get in, then go by; whichever order I decide.
I think he almost ran out of his hide on this mark…😳
This is a demonstration of how I work on balancing my dogs in the water. This is Captain. He’s a transition dog. I ran the blind cold originally from the re-entry point into the big pond. I ran around to the end of the channel and got him to return in the channel to me from the side (angling in toward me). Then, after a few fun bumpers (thus the hassling he is doing in the video) we set back up and ran this blind.
He has never done either the re-entry part, nor run from this point prior to today. You will notice he has no difficult getting out of the channel (perhaps a little early, but that’s another lesson). Then he proceeds to the proper re-entry location, makes the re-entry, and obeys the parameters we established on the original cold blind without my input.
No cheat

Proper re-entry

SOLD…
6 Gunners Up wingers available. As you can see they all work. I use them daily. Rubber is ok. One is new. I have three new sets of rubber to go with the wingers. I also have three new wires for the electronics connection, a new hook ring for the rubber, and two sets of leg snaps (holders). Paint is worn. Baskets are in good shape. These are working tools…
225.00 each (minimum 2) or 1200.00 for all 6.
No electronics included.
Master level bulldog triple we ran this afternoon. Mike is running Tramp here…
Go bird in very thick lily pad cover, bulldog is a cheating entry channel swim followed by a re-entry. Memory bird is in pads in the standing timber.
Close breaking birds for the first two marks.
4 month old Leo fetch training…
Leo. 4 months old and working a long distance pile
Tramp running the water blind I posted previously. Superb initial line, strong commitment once in the water to push down the open water, a couple of casts to get where I wanted her on the point(fat), and a couple at the end.
I cut out a portion of the open water swim for time sake
Sorry about the very end, I had the camera zoomed and was watching her at the critical ending…didn’t notice I had lowered it some.
Tramp is an excellent dog. This blind is tough. She has not run it before. Sure, she’s run down the pond, but that initial line is new for her.
Leo…3.75 months old. Triple with secondary selection pick up order 😊
He usually doesn’t try to break. He was a little jacked up this afternoon 🤙🏼
Incredible. He has never run this blind.
One more from today. 3.5 month old Leo. Amazing if you start them right you can completely steady a high powered little machine like this for marks and honor work without resorting to heavy handed tactics later. He did make a couple of longer swims that I didn’t video. Incredible little dog.
