Just for fun: if you’re in Enumclaw, Buckley or Bonney Lake, would you vote for us? There are different categories like for best non-profit and best veterinarian… I have no idea what happens if we win, but can’t hurt, right? :)
Well, I finally finished! It’s official, I passed my tests, turned in a qualifying case report, and now get to call myself a Certified Veterinary Medical Manipulation Practitioner (CVMMP)! Just passed my tests today so I’m excited. This is the veterinary version of chiropractic care, and helps so much with the diagnosis and treatment of pain or lameness. I’ve wanted to do this since I was a vet student pre-2003, so I’m excited to finally know it. I went through the canine version last year, but this year I finished the equine part and I’m actually certified. Looking forward to using this amazing treatment method to help so many animals in the future. ❤️😊
This applies to animals as well. Make sure farm animals have shade and water. Don’t leave dogs outside. Etc. I am currently in Florida for my EVMM exam and it’s in the high 90s so hopefully our western Washington critters will be a lot happier with the 80s but it’s a big change from what we’ve had, which is why we need to be aware.

Just fyi… if you see any claims online about dog deaths from these collars, they are not valid. It’s a bizarre smear campaign. There have been issues with counterfeit collars. The real collars can sometimes be associated with hypersensitivity skin reactions in some animals. But the collars are a safe and effective way to prevent fleas and ticks that can cause a lot of health problems. Just make sure you source the collar from a safe source like our online pharmacy. https://carouselmobilevetservices.securevetsource.com/site/view/164917_Home.pml?retUrl=https://www.carouselvet.com/&cms
On the morning of Tuesday, March 2, editors at America’s largest newspaper chain, Gannett, hit send on an “investigative” report that alleged that the popular Seresto flea and tick collars were killing hundreds of dogs and cats.
I have been meaning to post for a while with some links about the highly pathogenic avian flu (HPAI) that is unfortunately in our area. Anyone that has chickens or waterfowl, definitely you want to keep your birds away from any wild birds. It’s devastating if it hits your flock. 😞

Nothing like a last minute announcement, but I will be out of town today through Sunday. Bridgette will still be (wo)manning the phones and emails and can get in touch with me when I’m not on a plane or in class. 🙂 I’m headed to the first of 3 trainings in equine veterinary medical manipulation, the vet version of chiropractic. I completed the canine version last year, so just trying to make it even. 😉 See you next week!
Still snowed in because I couldn’t risk the truck on the roads around me yet. Trying to get some work done and Bosley was helping. You can’t see that Baloo is also on my lap. Lol
Because of the weather out in my neck of the woods, I’m not going to be out on the roads Monday. I just can’t risk the big truck going in a ditch and the roads aren’t clear here. Will see what happens Monday, hoping Tuesday we can head out again. Here’s what we will be doing at the sanctuary instead:

Whoops…
Had the share this adorable Starbucks card that we got from a fellow dachshund-lover… I didn’t even know they had these but I love it! Thank you, Lesley Salmonson !!!🤗❤️🤗❤️🤗
Happy Thanksgiving! We will be closed on Thursday, back for a short day on Friday. Enjoying time with my mom, who’s visiting.
Thankful to all of you for being part of our Carousel family and hope that you have a peaceful day.
Also thankful to the folks at Cascade Automotive in Enumclaw for working their butts off getting the truck back up and running after it died on Friday. Thanks to all of you who have been patiently waiting for me to get things done without it. I will get to you as soon as I can, I promise.
Thank you,
Dr. Heather, Bridgette, and Holly
A chocolate toxicity calculator just in time for the holidays. Safest to just keep all chocolate out of reach but if some nosey pup finds it, here’s a good calculator to figure out how much to worry.

The dog chocolate toxicity calculator will tell you whether the amount of chocolate your dog ate might be dangerous for it.
I want to give a shout out to our friends at SnR Pet Care (http://www.snrpetcare.com) as we head into the holiday season. They do great working caring for your pets while you’re away from home, whether it’s just for the day to work or to head out of town. Based in Maple Valley so very local. Thanks to Sandy and Randall for their great work. I wouldn’t hesitate to call them for our own critters if we had a more reasonable number of critters 😉

Since we missed Halloween, Bosley and Baloo decided to just say happy November 1st. 😆 Roscoe didn’t feel like participating today 🙂
I’ve been asked why I don’t recommend raw diets to my patients. So here you go. 🙂
Raw food is simply not healthier than a well-balanced, well-researched kibble, and the risks outweigh any potential "benefits". People mention healthier coats but that only means there is plenty of fat in the diet. There is no scientific information showing any health benefits from raw meat diets. If formulated by a veterinary nutritionist then it could be fine, except that there’s no reason to leave it raw where there are significant risks of contamination or infection, for the patients and the humans around them. Fresh cooked diets would have the same potential benefits without the risks.
Here are a few articles written in more detail about raw diets and why they are not generally recommended by veterinary professionals:
https://vetnutrition.tufts.edu/2016/01/raw-diets-a-healthy-choice-or-a-raw-deal/

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3003575/
Feeding of raw meat-based diets to pets has become an increasingly popular trend amongst pet owners. Owners, who desire to provide the best for their pets, seek veterinary opinions about food options. This paper reviews and applies standards of evidence-based ...
There have been myths about the problems of corn in pet food for a long time and I found this article with a lot of good references so I thought I would share 🙂 (quick take: corn isn’t evil) 😉

Best Friends Veterinary Center delivers full-service veterinary care. We emphasize high quality patient care and deliver friendly, helpful customer service.
I just keep finding interesting things to share 🙂 This one is like a full lecture, but very informative. A veterinary nutritionist from the UK who goes over various myths, facts and research about dog and cat nutrition. Not exactly sure when it was recorded but seems quite current since some of the research discussed isn’t very old. I enjoyed mostly just listening to it while I did barn chores 🙂

Here's a little info for folks that are feeding Hill's dog or cat food. Our Vetsource online pharmacy has partnered with Hill’s® to offer extra savings when you put your pet food on AutoShip! You can now receive an additional $5 off your first AutoShip order of Hill’s dry food, which can be combined with another 20% off AutoShip offer that’s currently available through the online store.
These purchases will also help pets in need through a Hill's Pet Nutrition program that supports shelter animals by providing them with high-quality nutrition.
If you've already purchased your Hill's food through our website/pharmacy before, you'll receive an email from VetSource on Wednesday, Sept. 22 explaining it. Otherwise, I think you can just go to the website and start your order. Not sure if we have to wait until September 22nd. Kinda nice to support Hill’s in helping to feed thousands of shelter pets and get good deals on food, also. I know it's hard to beat chewy's availability and prices sometimes, but we're trying. :)
The page "shop now" button should take you to the pharmacy home page, or you can get to it here: https://carouselmobilevetservices.securevetsource.com/site/view/164917_Home.pml?retUrl=https://www.carouselvet.com/&cms)

I have decided to start carrying a few products from the Veterinarian Recommended Solutions nutraceutical line. They have a really nice arthritis supplement recommended by orthopedic surgeons, an omega 3 supplement used by dermatologists and surgeons, a hepatic supplement for dogs with liver disease that is easier and less expensive than the leading liver supplement, and a guaranteed cbd hemp formula that is less expensive than some Aj’s guaranteed to have zero THC. They have a few others for calming and urinary tract infections and immune support as well. All are backed by research and 3rd party quality control testing and a 100% satisfaction guarantee and they make it easy to get refills through their website directly rather than us having to stock it and you having to wait forever for us to get it to you 🙂 If we dispense something to you, their veterinary technicians will follow up to make sure everything is going well and that you’re not having trouble getting your pet to eat it or having any side effects etc. These are generally supplements to take long term over at least a few months to get the best effect so it’s nice to have their company standing behind the products so much they will talk directly to the customers and answer any questions etc. I will want your feedback because if we aren’t happy we don’t have to keep carrying them. But I’ve heard really good things about these products from other vets and testimonials so we’ll see. Just thought I would share since it’s a new product line for us. We’ll work through any questions as we go :)
Baloo, Bodhi and Bosley. Working hard today :)
Since so many of you see Sadie in the truck yelling at Bosley or Bodhi or other dogs, etc., I thought you would like to see her peaceful side. She really is a little love bug as long as those other dogs don’t bother her. 😉❤️☺️

Sleepy 😴 Sunday With Sadie Sue 🐕🦺🐾 ☕️
For those of you waiting on notes or labs or anything else from me, I’m sorry. Everything requires the Internet, and this weekend both CenturyLink and Verizon were against me. They simply didn’t work so I have a lot of catching up to do but will get to you ASAP. Hope you had a good holiday weekend
I don’t think I’ve shared this link before. This page has updated info about the emergency hospitals in our area. Shows their wait times and phone numbers and addresses. Helpful in times like these where human and veterinary emergency rooms are so swamped. I can’t help with human ERs so you’re on your own at trying to avoid needing to go there, but at least here’s a way to help the dogs and cats if something happens.
Posted 8:38 am; wait times change rapidly and often, please call hospitals directly for the most current information
For all of our horse owners that might travel out of the area… definitely want to make sure the west Nile vaccines are current

Our mission: To advance the cause of veterinary medicine and to better the lives of those touched by it.
On a less serious note or 2:
1) Apparently because we use VetSource for our online pharmacy, you can also order through Amazon! If our online store is out of stock for prescription foods or something or it’s more convenient, try Amazon. I had no idea. The prescription request goes to us through VetSource so it’s easy to verify and they check the source to make sure it’s coming directly from Royal Canin or Hills or Purina etc. so that it’s reputable. Just a little FYI since stock of stuff has been difficult to find sometimes 🙂 I’m not sure if regular over-the-counter diets can be reliably ordered through Amazon or not, but at least this might help.
2) I found out about a website run by veterinary nutritionists: www.petdiets.com It has some nutrition resources and myth busting and connects you with a nutritionist to develop a home-cooked meal that’s balanced… lots of good info if you’re interested.

Technical update, August 2021:
COVID-19 has a lovely delta variant that we need to contend with now. Our area is again high transmission. So, we are back to masks in the truck if we have to have clients in at all. I am fully vaccinated but not all of us have been able to complete vaccination and I do not want to be part of a transmission line to anyone, no matter how unlikely. So, we follow the CDC and WSVMA and Washington state recommendations and guidelines: masks indoors regardless of vaccination status. And we hope that none of our clients/friends get sick or die from this crappy contagious virus. We hope everyone that CAN get vaccinated IS vaccinated so that the ones that can’t be will be protected by the rest of us. ❤️
Thanks, guys!

Little Bosley at work Friday…
I passed my tests!
Now, as soon as I turn in my case report, I will be official and can put CMMP after my name! 🤗
Ok, so Dr. Heather is REALLY unavailable now. In Florida for class but lost her phone, so if anyone has called or texted the emergency phone we’re sorry. 😞 Hoping to get it back Sunday maybe since class is in Ocala and phone maybe in Orlando somewhere. Not available for emergency help anyway, but still… sorry. Bridgette is your best bet 253-217-3210 and Dr. Heather will try to check email
Happy 4th of July, everyone! 🇺🇸 I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful weather and staying safe! We are closed Monday, July 5th, in observance of the holiday. Bridgette will return calls and emails on Tuesday.
Dr. Heather will be leaving Wednesday, July 7th, for her final canine spinal manipulation course and exam. Assuming all goes well, she will be officially certified by IVMI when she comes back, so that’s exciting 🙂
Happy birthday, USA. Let’s work to always do better for everyone. 🎉😊❤️
Some infographics with good ideas about how to keep pets safe during the 4th of July. Sorry, they’re small. :)
This isn’t heat-related, but if anyone is in need of meds, flea products, shampoo, treats, toys, joint supplements or some pet foods, you could check out our online pharmacy. There is a “flash sale” going on right now where you can get up to $15 off, I think, using the coupon code YAY15. Has to be purchased by this Wednesday, June 30th. So if you’re hiding in the AC doing some online shopping, see if this helps 🙂

Thanks to the folks at Washington State Animal Response Team (WASART) for setting up this cooling station for animals. Here’s more information about it if you need it.
https://www.kiro7.com/news/local/emergency-animal-cooling-shelter-opens-enumclaw/IOMKGCEB5FHCVMKDXYQZ552JL4/?fbclid=IwAR0bGItG5N4W7v900f1CgIWA21ifSA_O0Hy8T6HcTA_56AlxoPcFD0WuvIw
Animals who live in King County and are not doing well in the heat have a place to go for relief.
The Carousel truck will not be on the road today for appointments or emergencies. It’s simply too hot for the drugs and sensitive equipment. The air conditioning isn’t working while the generator is out of commission waiting for a part to be installed. Anyone that saw me on Friday knows that the cab AC wasn’t able to keep the truck temperatures below 90 even when outdoor temps were in the 80s so it just isn’t possible. Also not a good idea to sedate or vaccinate or otherwise stress the animals that are already stressed by the heat.
Bridgette will be answering phones and emails as usual since she’s in Arizona and it (oddly) isn’t as hot there as it is here right now. :)
Dr. Heather will be working at the house/farm to help take care of the Steven's Animal Sanctuary critters in this heat. Hopefully you guys are all able to do the same for yourselves and your critters. There are animal cooling stations set up in Enumclaw by Washington State Animal Response Team (WASART) if needed. Check out the article we posted last week with good ideas about keeping cool. Fans, shade, shaving as needed for shaggy ones, sprinklers if there is a fan and the animals tolerate it (alpacas do, not always the others). Shaving just the skin over the jugular veins can help if you have a shaggy horse.
Be safe out there!
