🐾 Meet Grayson 🐾

Grayson, a 4 years old Persian cat, recently visited the VSB ER after experiencing a life-threatening urinary obstruction. His family noticed he was having difficulty urinating, and our emergency team quickly diagnosed him with a urethral obstruction caused by Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). 🐱

FLUTD is a common condition in cats, especially young males, that can cause pain, straining to urinate, frequent trips to the litter box, and excessive grooming of the ge***al area. In some cases, inflammation and debris can form a urethral plug, blocking the flow of urine entirely. Without prompt treatment, this condition can quickly become an emergency!

Thanks to his family's quick action and the care of our ER and ICU team, Grayson received the treatment he needed and has made a full recovery. 💙

If your cat is straining to urinate, making frequent trips to the litter box, vocalizing while trying to urinate, or not producing urine, seek veterinary care immediately. Early intervention can make all the difference. 🚨

June is National Microchipping Month! 🐾

There’s no better time to make sure your pet’s microchip information is up to date. Even the most careful pet owners can experience the unexpected, and a registered microchip can be one of the most important tools in helping a lost pet find their way home.

If your pet is already microchipped, take a few minutes to verify that your contact information is current. If they haven’t been microchipped yet, talk with your veterinarian about this quick, safe, and permanent form of identification.

When every moment counts, a microchip can make all the difference in reuniting families with their beloved pets. ❤️

Meet Stevie, a 5-year-old West Highland Terrier who presented to our Surgery Service with a concerning mass in her left pelvic limb that had been slowly growing over the course of about 6 months.

Because of the size and location of the mass, advanced imaging with a CT scan was recommended to better evaluate how deeply the mass extended into the surrounding tissues and muscles. A biopsy was then performed to help determine exactly what type of mass Stevie had and guide the best treatment plan.

Dr. Moser performed Stevie’s surgery to remove the mass, which included a partial excision of the middle gluteal muscle due to the infiltrative nature of the growth.

The good news? Biopsy results confirmed the mass was a benign infiltrative lipoma — meaning it was not cancerous. While lipomas are often thought of as “fatty tumors,” infiltrative lipomas can grow into nearby muscle and tissue, making them more complex than typical fatty masses and often requiring advanced imaging and specialized surgical planning.

Cases like Stevie’s highlight the importance of monitoring any new or changing lumps and bumps in our pets. Early evaluation can help determine the best course of action and improve outcomes.

We are so happy Stevie is recovering well!

Did you know VSB has its very own blood donor program? 🩸

This year, our Medical Director, Dr. Hoff, and our Internist, Dr. Lock, teamed up to launch VSB’s in-house blood donor program. With a busy emergency department and intensive care unit, VSB sees many critical patients who require life-saving blood transfusions, making access to donated blood incredibly important! 💉

Being a blood donor takes a special kind of pet! Our donors must stay up to date on vaccinations, receive monthly flea, tick, and heartworm prevention, undergo biannual bloodwork screenings, and have regular physical exams performed by our veterinarians. Thankfully, our incredible veterinary staff works hard to keep every donor happy, healthy, and ready to help save lives.

The best part? Every one of our donors is a beloved VSB employee pet! 💙

Meet our amazing blood donors!

“Our dog, Opie, was recently a patient at VSB after we brought him in at 3:30 AM on a Sunday morning. He was seen promptly, and before any testing was done, the team carefully explained the costs and what to expect. Once results came back, the doctor thoroughly reviewed the treatment plan with us, and we left knowing Opie was in good hands.

Over the next several days, one of the doctors updated us at least twice a day. Any changes in treatment — including costs — were clearly communicated and thoughtfully explained. When we visited Opie, it was obvious he was receiving loving and compassionate care.

When it was time for Opie to go home, the discharge instructions were explained in detail, and we even received a comprehensive report of his entire hospital stay. While emergency care is never something you hope to need, we are incredibly grateful for the care Opie received and would not hesitate to return to VSB if needed.”

❤️ Thank you, Opie’s family, for trusting us with his care.

Meet Ozzie! 🐾😍

Ozzie is a 7-year-old Miniature Australian Shepherd who presented to VSB’s Surgery Service in February after suddenly developing swelling around his throat. Concerned by the sudden change, Ozzie’s parents immediately rushed him to the closest emergency clinic, where he was then referred to VSB for further evaluation and treatment.

After evaluation, Dr. Moser diagnosed Ozzie with a right cervical/pharyngeal sialocele.

A sialocele is a collection of saliva that leaks from a damaged salivary gland or duct and accumulates under the skin or within surrounding tissues. These swellings can become uncomfortable and may interfere with eating, breathing, or normal movement if left untreated.

Surgery was recommended, and Dr. Moser performed a right mandibular/sublingual sialadenectomy to remove the affected salivary glands. Ozzie recovered comfortably in our ICU overnight and was discharged home with his family the following day.

We were so happy to hear from Ozzie's mom that he's doing well and is loving life with his little sister Opal! 🥰💙

🐾 Lulu’s Story of Strength 🐾

Lulu, a 3-year-old Shepherd mix, came to VSB’s surgery service in 2024 after being struck by a motor vehicle. She arrived with multiple serious injuries, including several lacerations, a pneumothorax (air around the lungs), left sacroiliac neuropathy, a left sacroiliac fracture, and a right sacroiliac luxation—resulting in a complex pelvic fracture.

Despite the severity of her injuries, Lulu showed incredible resilience from the very beginning. Dr. Vaughn performed surgery to stabilize her fractures, giving Lulu the best chance at recovery.

After spending three days in the ICU receiving intensive, around-the-clock care, Lulu was strong enough to be discharged home with her loving family.

Her journey is a powerful reminder of both the fragility and strength of our beloved pets—and the life-changing impact of skilled veterinary care.

💙 Please join us in celebrating Lulu’s bravery and the team that helped her on the road to recovery!

With the rise of spring comes along an increase of pollen as flowers bloom and grasses, weeds, and trees flourish. Just like people, pets can suffer from seasonal allergies. Here are a few tips to help reduce exposure during allergy season:

🌸 Bathe pets more often
🌼 Wipe them down after going outside
🌳 Wash their bedding weekly
🌻 Keep your home tidy (especially rugs and upholstered furniture)
🌷 Replace air filters

If you notice your pet is experiencing any consistent symptoms of irritation or discomfort, visit your veterinarian to help evaluate their condition and discuss treatment options.
