🔬 Leaky Gut Part 2: What the heck is Zonulin? 🧠🐶

ICYMI: In Part 1, we broke down what leaky gut is and why it’s often the real culprit behind your pup’s skin issues, allergies, and digestive drama.

Now let’s dig deeper into a key player: Zonulin.

Zonulin is a protein that acts like a gatekeeper for the gut lining - deciding what gets through and what stays out.

When zonulin levels spike, those tight gut junctions loosen… and that’s when the trouble starts:

🚨 Undigested food, toxins, and bacteria sneak through
🔥 The immune system flips out
🐾 Cue: inflammation, itching, p**p problems, and more

But how do you know if zonulin is high?

Leaky Gut Syndrome happens when the lining of your dog’s gut gets damaged - kind of like a fence with holes in it 🧬

💔 On June 30th, we said goodbye to our beloved Baxter - aka Boogles - our trail buddy, snow dog, water baby, and little old man in a fur suit.

Just two days earlier, he was smiling and happy, celebrating my birthday by my side. By 4 AM the next morning, he woke up struggling, hit suddenly by severe bilateral aspiration pneumonia. We rushed him to Steel City Emergency Vets , where the incredible team fought for him with everything they had. We are so grateful for the care, kindness, and compassion they showed - not just to him, but to us as well.

A heartfelt thank-you to Wesley (I wish I’d gotten more names - I was in shock) for calling Lap Of Love Veterinary Hospice when I couldn’t find the words. And to Dr. Elizabeth Myrick - you are a beautiful, bright light. You helped him pass peacefully at home, surrounded by love. I’ll never forget your grace.

Baxie was rescued by the amazing team at and came home with us in 2013. Ever quiet, thoughtful, a little nervous, but always full of joy. He traveled to 41 states and 2 countries and moved with us 6 times in 13 years. He loved snow, swimming, off-leash hikes, car rides, and naps in the sun. He appreciated everything. And he loved us deeply. He led our pack with quiet wisdom, and now the silence he leaves behind is deafening.

Our other dogs are grieving alongside us. I don’t know how we move forward yet - we’re just trying to make space for grief, and there isn't much energy left for anything else just yet.

To everyone who has reached out - thank you. Your love means more than we can say. Please know we feel it, even if we can’t respond right now.

“You haven’t lived until you’ve Boogled.” He taught us that. And we’re better people and pet parents because of him.

Introducing......🥁 Hiker. Hugger. Baby Hippo: Meet Roscoe!

We had the opportunity to take this sweet boy from. out for an adventure this morning- and WOW! What a gem 💎 He is:

🐾 Super chill, super friendly
🐾 Great with all other dogs that we encountered
🐾 So polite and welcoming with strangers - at least 3 different groups stopped us to ask about him!
🐾 Great in the car, loves the trail, and splashed around in the water like a champ
🐾 Not one PEEP from him the entire time - just smiles and a windshield wiper tail 🥺💖

He is the PERFECT mix of calm and playful - down for an adventure, but also very much into belly rubs and snacks!

🎉 I turn 44 this Saturday - 6/28 (*This sentence will self-destruct in 30 seconds 🤪😂)
But for real though - It’s hitting different this year.

I’ve been moving through some tough stuff lately - trying to keep pace with life's obligations, stay present for others, provide for my own fuzzy crew, and still somehow feel like I matter. Like I'm doing enough. Like I AM enough.

And even though my hubby tells me all the time that I am a limited-edition, one-batch-only, handmade artisan snack who runs an empire of crazy doggos, two full-time jobs, human and fuzzy advocacy, and still somehow finds time for mucho sarcasm and laughs........if I’m being real, most days I don’t truly feel up to the task. Recently, the noise of the world - the heaviness, the heartbreak, and the never-ending hustle - feels SO much louder than the joy. And I have a bad habit of taking it all very personally😔 (I see you, fellow empaths).

But here’s what I do know: genuine kindness typically cuts through all of it for me.

So if you’re wondering how to celebrate another trip around the sun for me (other than Edgar's cake and sweet sparkling wine, obviously), here’s what I’d love more than anything:

👉 Do something kind this weekend! Hold a door. Compliment a stranger. Let that car merge in front of you on the highway. Call someone who crosses your mind. Volunteer your time. Spend some time and share some treats with a shelter pup. Help someone feel seen.

That kind of ripple? It means EVERYTHING. And honestly, it’s the best birthday gift I could ask for 🎁

I am grateful for another year of building community, raising awareness, dealing K9 treats on the streets, and living this doggo-filled, advocacy-driven life. Thanks for being part of it. Here’s to the double 4's, and still doing my best to show up with a genuine heart 💛
