Rosie came to us as a high-energy, 13-week-old Mini Goldendoodle puppy with moderate to severe impulse control issues. The family struggled with ongoing biting, barking, jumping, scratching, and attentional deficit issues. These presented far beyond typical and acceptable puppy development behaviors. Taken together, these issues clustered as a mid-level generalized anxiety disorder. Left untreated, they would have likely escalated into higher orders of anxiety and manifested as an obsessive compulsive disorder. But we stopped all of that.

After her canine parent training sessions, the family learned effective boundary-setting and communication techniques needed to alleviate Rosie's anxiety. She is now a happy, well-adjusted adolescent who continues to learn and explore the world within the safe confines of a well-constructed family.

**Bonus points, because Rosie is now so well-behaved, their children with autism spectrum disorder have learned to not be fearful of dogs**

Is your dog actually yielding to your authority, or have they just learned a new way to manage you?

In canine behavioral dynamics, Placating (or Compliance as Camouflage) occurs when a dog uses covert-passive strategies to maintain autonomy while giving the illusion of total obedience. Instead of genuine deference, the dog performs memorized routines or appeasement gestures to satisfy the owner's expectations on their own terms.

Recognizable Placating Behaviors:

-Self-Initiated Routines: Executing a command (like going to their place or kennel) before being asked, then framing it as obedience. Because the dog chose when to begin, they retained control of the decision.

-Appeasement as a Shield: Dropping into a low head posture, soft eyes, or a placating lick the moment a boundary is about to be enforced—effectively converting discipline into a performance of deference to earn a free pass.

-Negotiated Compliance: Offering partial submission (e.g., rolling halfway over or stopping just shy of a boundary) to appease the handler without fully yielding.

-The Mechanics
Placating allows the dog to hand the owner a false sense of authority while quietly managing the household under the radar. It often works alongside Assumption—where the dog claims an unoffered decision, then uses placating to disguise that claim as submission.

-The Counter Strategist
Addressing this requires holding both a clear decision boundary and an emotional boundary:

-Own the Initiative: Do not accept self-initiated compliance as true yield. The handler must define when a routine begins and ends. The dog must wait for authorization.

Ignore the Performance: Do not abandon a boundary simply because the dog offers an appeasement posture. Hold the boundary calmly until true, settled yield is achieved.

Real leadership means holding clear, consistent authorization.

Earlier in life, I worked as an artist assistant for Birmingham-based Mark Carder, a nationally renowned portrait artist known for his realist portraits of President George Bush, former Secretary of State James Baker, and many more.

Under his guidance, I trained in the alla prima method and later developed my own, unique approach to contemporary realism.

Not only is Heidi actively alerting to Tucker's seizures—giving this family invaluable peace of mind—but she has completely transformed his daily life:

Tucker is back in school with Heidi right by his side, establishing a sense of normalcy. She has become incredibly popular with the school staff, who have learned to fully rely on her incredible intuition and alerts.

Remarkably, Heidi has even started performing untaught tasks, like independently finding teachers and directing them straight to Tucker when he needs help.

Does your dog jump and hit you the moment you walk through the door? In our framework, social jumping represents far more than just an excitable dog that is "happy" to see you.

In the 3-Dimensional framework, this behavior is a physical manipulation whereby your dog violates your intimate boundary space to conduct what we call a leadership audit. This is a test of a pet parent's ability or willingness to set physical boundaries during moments of high intensity change—like coming home or having guests over.

If left unchecked, this physical manipulation can escalate right up the misbehavior tree into more dangerous, reactive behaviors. The only time jumping is acceptable is if you explicitly invite the dog into your personal space to make contact with you.

We should not pander to this behavior, or contribute to it by praising the dog at this time. Instead, we should answer the audit by setting proper boundaries. Once the dog is back to a baseline of self-regulation, we can pet, praise and snuggle to our hearts content.

Great advice from our friends over at Canine Country Club.

It is PEAK SNAKE SEASON in Alabama and we've gotten 2 reports from clients whose dogs have been bitten by venomous snakes while on a hike. Sadly, one beloved pet did not survive, which prompted us to share this information with you in an effort to keep your family safe.

Alabama's six venomous snakes are copperheads, coral snakes, water moccasins/cottonmouths, pigmy rattlesnakes, timber rattlesnakes and eastern diamondback rattlesnakes. From May - July, snakes are heavily hunting and breeding. During the hottest days, they are most active early mornings and late afternoons/evenings to avoid the intense daytime heat.

Snake identification can be tricky, but as a general rule, if a snake has an elliptical – vertical slit – pupil, it’s venomous. If it has a round pupil, it isn’t, except for coral snakes, which shares the round pupils of nonvenomous snakes. Finding a coral snake is a once or twice-in-a-lifetime event. More common are Water Moccasins, which are going to be in or near bodies of water – swamps, ponds, wooded streams. But out on the trail the most common venomous snakes will be Copperheads and Timber Rattlesnakes.

If bitten, attempt to snap a photo of the snake, but time is of the essence. Venomous bites will be accompanied by intense pain and swelling, and you should seek medical attention immediately. If your regular vet does not stock antivenom, you will need to go to an emergency animal hospital.
