In Korean folk art, especially Joseon Dynasty minhwa paintings, tigers are often depicted smoking long pipes, wearing hats, or sitting like awkward old men.

Rather than portraying them as majestic predators, Korean artists intentionally made them look goofy, anxious, cross eyed, or oddly human. These “derpy” expressions were part of the joke. The tiger usually symbolized authority figures such as arrogant aristocrats, corrupt officials, or self important scholars, while nearby magpies represented ordinary people mocking them.

The smoking pipes added another layer of satire. To***co spread into Korea in the 1600s and pipe smoking quickly became associated with adult male status, leisure, scholarship, and upper class masculinity. By showing a tiger lazily smoking like an elderly nobleman, artists transformed the terrifying predator of the mountains into a pompous, almost ridiculous bureaucrat. Some paintings even exaggerate the tiger’s facial expression so it looks tired, confused, or mildly irritated, like an old official annoyed by gossiping villagers.

The exaggerated faces also reflected the free and playful style of minhwa itself, which valued humor, symbolism, and emotional expression over realism. That is why many Korean tiger paintings feel surprisingly modern and cartoonish despite being centuries old.

You wake to something on your head.
And realise it’s no longer just your bed
Then a noise… it’s your cat once more
Dragging your sock across the floor.

You try to sleep. They sit and stare.
Your feline child in furry wear.

Then comes the paw upon your face,
A single claw with perfect grace
Inserted gently up your nose
Like, “Human. Rise. I hunger. Go.”

Yet every dawn, despite the pain,
You’d choose the chaos once again.
For though your sleep is shredded flat,
Life’s better owned by your baby cat 😻

A Delta Air Lines overnight flight from Las Vegas to Atlanta turned hilarious when a cat escaped its carrier in coach, marched confidently through the cabin, and settled itself in first class under a seat. Flight attendants were seen trying to negotiate with the stubborn feline before finally carrying the unimpressed traveler back to economy. The viral clip had viewers joking that the cat knew exactly where it belonged.
