To The Editor:
The TDC is missing out on a golden opportunity to profit off yet another environmental disaster in the "Fabulous Florida Keys." This time, it is the recent heat wave which has left a path of destruction in its wake.
Remember when our local waters turned from crystal clear, cobalt blue to green as a result of algal blooms fueled by excess nutrients (sewage, agricultural runoff, etc.). The TDC began to refer to our waters as "the emerald green waters of the Florida Keys." That certainly sounds much better than the algal green waters of the Florida Keys. A bit misleading, but so what -- whatever keeps the almighty tourist dollar flowing into the Keys is fair game.
Now, we are faced with even more negative publicity -- news of the highest seawater temperatures ever recorded and massive coral bleaching events. This news, unless countered with a slick marketing campaign, could seriously impact the tourist industry and not in a positive way.
When life throws you a lemon--make lemonade is what my dad always said. Instead of the highest seawater temperatures ever recorded, how about the Florida Keys, home of world's largest "natural" hot tub. This news about massive coral bleaching is just nonsense -- those are albino corals, very rare and quite beautiful. The Florida Keys has the highest concentration of these albino corals to be found anywhere on the planet!
So, I suggest the TDC jump on this one before the naysayer environmental wacko's get the upper hand and start crying wolf - scaring away the tourists. A real attention getter would be a world wide ad like: "The emerald green waters of the Fabulous Florida Keys are open for business--relax in the world's largest hot tub while exploring our beautiful and virgin albino coral reefs!"
Never worry about stretching the truth a little, or telling outright lies as the end justifies the means -- anything you can say to keep the almighty tourist dollars flowing into the Keys, and US 1 packed with bumper to bumper traffic, is fair game!
