Ever wonder what a rattlesnake’s rattle really sounds like? 🐍💨
Get up close with one of our Albino Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes (Crotalus atrox) and hear it for yourself!
Many people believe rattlesnakes are aggressive, but that’s a common misconception. These snakes are defensive, not aggressive—they’d much rather avoid conflict than pick a fight. When you’re only a few inches off the ground, a human looks like a giant!
A rattlesnake’s rattle is made of modified scales that click together to create that iconic sound. Each time the snake sheds its skin, it adds a new segment to the rattle. The noise comes from those hollow segments vibrating against each other—like nature’s own warning maracas! Over time, they can break off rattle segments and grow new ones.
And here’s a myth buster: rattlesnakes don’t have to rattle before they strike. The rattle is a warning, not a guarantee—so always give these amazing reptiles space and respect in the wild.
