Rain never stops us! And that means the puddles the next day never do, either! Although our arena is uncovered, we do not see this as a disadvantage. Anyone can learn well in perfect conditions such as a covered arena with consistent lighting that blocks outside distractions. With ours being uncovered, it is exposed to the elements, the lighting that changes by the day, and anything around the arena within earshot and eyesight that can grab the attention of your horse.
Why are puddles important?
In the wild, water hides predators like crocodiles or bears and although a horse is big, they are still very aware that they are a prey animal. This means even domesticated horses that have lived a safe life (unlike mustangs brought to captivity), a horse's instinct is still to be wary of anything that obstructs their vision or footing, as it could risk their safety. Horses get nervous around puddles not only because of these prey instincts, but also due to poor depth perception; they can't tell if it's a shallow puddle or a deep, dangerous hole. Reflections move which makes them believe something could be alive in it, and they fear hidden predators or even getting stuck in mud which would put them in a vulnerable position. Their survival depends on avoiding risks, so a water-filled depression seems like a potential trap, not just a wet patch.
A good listening horse will trust their rider's instincts over their own and allow you to direct them in a way that will keep them safe. Our horses are very well accustomed to trusting their riders, but they will still show certain concerns such as pausing for a moment, leaning down to look hard at the water, hesitating for a step, or perking both ears forward to let you know they are alert and feeling cautious. This moment is something you only find out on a trail, or in an arena like ours where puddles are possible. These moments teach you to pay attention to your horse and respond, to be considerate of their worries and offer strength in your direction and to not have tunnel vision by considering the bigger picture that a prey animal is carrying a predator.
