The Iowa summer heat is officially here! To keep my favorite four-legged clients feeling their best between grooming sessions, I love finding simple ways to help them stay hydrated.

Today’s Thursday Recipe is a total lifesaver: Watermelon & Cucumber Coolers! 🍉🥒

Watermelon is about 92% water, and cucumber adds that extra refreshing crunch. Here is how I make them:

1. Grab some seedless watermelon and a peeled cucumber.
2. Toss them in a blender until smooth. (You can add a splash of coconut water for extra electrolytes!)
3. Pour the mix into an ice cube tray or fun silicone molds.
4. Freeze until solid.

These are such a hit because they’re low-calorie and super cooling. Just remember to remove any seeds or rinds first! It’s the little things like this that help keep our pups happy and healthy all summer long.

Stay cool out there!

International Corgi Day is just around the corner on June 4th! If you share your home with one of these low-riding loafs, you’re probably very familiar with 'Corgi Glitter': that lovely coating of fur that ends up on every single surface you own. Shedding is just part of the package with those thick double coats, but I see a lot of owners making the same mistake when brushing at home. The #1 slip-up is only brushing the top layer of fur. To really manage the shedding, you have to get all the way down to the skin to pull out that loose undercoat. Using a slicker brush followed by a metal comb is the best way to make sure you aren't leaving any 'glitter' behind! I love working with these spunky personalities in my quiet, one-on-one salon. It’s the perfect setting for a relaxing, focused deshedding session where I can take my time and make sure every inch of that coat is healthy and clear to keep your pet feeling their best.

Mark your calendars because Hug Your Cat Day is coming up on June 4th!

While my salon is often full of wagging tails and happy barks, I definitely have a soft spot for my feline friends too. There’s something so special about the quiet, gentle bond I share with the cats that come to see me for their one-on-one grooming sessions.

I wanted to send a little reminder to give your kitty some extra love as we get ready for their big day, and a big hug if they’ll let you! I’d love to see your sweet feline friends, so please share a photo of your cat in the comments below!

There’s nothing quite like a splash in the pool or a dip in the lake to beat the summer heat!

I love seeing pups enjoy their summer adventures, but I always remind pet parents about one simple step: the fresh-water rinse. Whether it’s chlorine from the pool or minerals and debris from the lake, those elements can really take a toll on a dog’s coat if left to dry.

Chlorine can strip away natural oils, leaving the fur feeling brittle, while lake water often leaves behind silt that leads to pesky tangles and skin irritation. A quick, thorough rinse with clean water immediately after their swim helps wash away those irritants before they have a chance to settle in.

This kind of proactive care is exactly what I focus on here at Fetching Styles. My one-on-one sessions are all about those little details that keep your pet’s skin healthy and their coat manageable between visits. It’s all about keeping things calm, relaxing, and healthy for my furry clients!

Has your pet had their first swim of the season yet?

I’ve been thinking a lot about Pet Appreciation Week coming up, and it really brought me back to why I started Fetching Styles. I remember working in busy, loud shops and seeing how stressed some of our furry friends would get. That "aha" moment hit me hard: I knew I wanted to create something different.

I wanted a space where it’s just me and your pet, away from the noise and the rush. My goal has always been to provide a quiet, one-on-one environment where even the most nervous pup can feel at ease. This calm setting isn't just about the haircut; it’s about the connection. It gives me the chance to really pay attention to the little things, like a new bump or a change in their skin, so I can help you keep them as healthy as possible.

Spending my days with these sweet souls is the best part of my job. Seeing a pet walk in tentative and leave feeling relaxed and happy is why I do what I do. I truly appreciate the trust you place in me to care for your family members. Happy Pet Appreciation Week!

As May comes to a close, I’m looking back on this past month with such a full heart. National Pet Month is always a special time, but getting to spend quiet, one-on-one moments with all your sweet pets makes it even more meaningful for me.

I truly love what I do. Seeing a nervous pup relax into a bath or watching a senior pet enjoy a gentle brush-out is exactly why I focus so much on creating a calm, stress-free environment. Each pet who comes through my door isn’t just a client to me; they’re a little soul I get the privilege of caring for.

While the official celebration might be winding down on the 31st, for me, every single day is an opportunity to celebrate the incredible bond we share with our animals. Thank you for trusting me with your furry family members this month and every month. I’m so lucky to have the best job in the world! 🐾💕

International Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Day is coming up this Wednesday, May 27th!

I have such a soft spot for these pups. Their sweet, gentle personalities make every one-on-one session in my salon so peaceful and enjoyable. And don’t even get me started on those beautiful, silky ears, they are easily one of my favorite features to work on!

Part of the dedicated care I provide is ensuring that gorgeous coat stays healthy, soft, and tangle-free. It’s all about those little details that keep them feeling their best long after they leave my chair.

I’d love to see your sweet Spaniels! If you have a Cavalier at home, please share a photo of them in the comments so I can see those adorable faces.

Is shaving your dog for summer actually a good idea? I hear this question so often when the humidity starts to climb here in the Quad Cities! If you have a double-coated breed (like chow chows, huskies, samoyeds, pomeranians and more) the answer might surprise you.

It seems logical: we wear less clothing to stay cool, so why not do the same for our pups? But for double-coated breeds, shaving can actually make them hotter.

Think of their coat like a high-tech thermos. It insulates them from the cold in the winter, but in the summer, it actually protects them from the heat and sun. When I shave a double coat, I’m removing that natural protection, which can lead to sunburn and even heatstroke. Plus, there’s a big risk the coat will grow back patchy or damaged.

My favorite way to help them beat the heat is a deep de-shedding treatment. By carefully removing that thick, dead undercoat, I’m opening up the vents so air can circulate all the way to their skin. It’s the safest way to keep them comfortable while keeping their coat healthy and beautiful.
