๐Ÿพ Recovery Update: Walter

Some patients leave a lasting impression, and Walter is definitely one of them. ๐Ÿ’™

Walter, a 12-year-old Pomeranian, recently visited LRVSS after being referred by .

Walter was having trouble breathing comfortably because of an elongated soft palate โ€” extra tissue at the back of the mouth that can partially block the airway and make breathing noisy or difficult.

To help him breathe easier, Dr. Phil Zeltzman performed a soft palate resection, a surgery that removes the excess tissue and improves airflow.

Weโ€™re happy to report that Walter is recovering well and is on his way to enjoying more comfortable breaths and better quality of life. ๐Ÿถโœจ

๐Ÿ“ธ Bonus: Walter is pictured with Kat, one of our amazing team members who helped care for him during his visit.

๐Ÿ‘‰ When to seek help: If your dog snores loudly, struggles with exercise, has noisy breathing, or has trouble cooling down, it may be more than just a quirky habit. Ask your veterinarian about a referral to www.LRVSS.com.

๐Ÿพ Guess who came to see us? ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฆฎ

Penny, a 9-year-old female Labrador Retriever, visited LRVSS after being referred by . ๐Ÿฆฎ

๐Ÿ”Ž The challenge:
Like many Labradors, Penny couldnโ€™t resist chasing a squirrel. ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ After jumping off a porch in pursuit of her furry target, she suffered a fracture in her right front leg that required specialized surgical care. ๐Ÿฆฎ๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ’ก The solution:
Something didn't look right on Penny's X-rays. Based on the suspicion that there was cancer in the bone, Dr. Phil Zeltzman performed a right front limb amputation. While the idea of amputation can sound scary, dogs adapt incredibly well to life on three legs and can return to many of the activities they love. ๐Ÿฆฎ

โœจ The outcome:
The biopsy confirmed bone cancer in the bone. Penny is recovering well and learning to navigate the world as a tripod pup. Dogs are amazingly resilient, and many surprise their families with how quickly they adjust after surgery. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฆด

๐Ÿ‘‰ When to seek help:
If your pet has a serious injury and is unable to use a leg, donโ€™t assume thereโ€™s nothing that can be done. Ask your veterinarian about a referral to www.LRVSS.com to discuss all available treatment options. ๐Ÿฉบ

A big thank-you to for trusting us with Pennyโ€™s care. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿฆฎ

Gioia, a sweet 1 year old German shepherd, was hit by a car and shattered her forearm (radius & ulna).
The radius was repaired with a plate and 8 screws (and a wire).
Then her nurses decorated her splint.
She is now safely recovering at home.
If your pet or your patient has a fracture, we're here to help - reach out for a referral or consultation at www.LRVSS.com

Margot, a 2 year old Basenji, dislocated her ankle while having fun in Colorado.
Confirming the diagnosis required a special X-ray called a stress view.
You can see below the big difference between a normal X-ray and the stress X-ray.
Dr. Pete Baia repaired it with 3 screwed and 2 special sutures.
She is now recovering at home.
We thank HanoverView Animal Hospital for their kind referral.

๐Ÿพ Say hello to Cooper!

Cooper is a 14-year-old male Schnauzer/Poodle mix with adorable salt-and-pepper coloring who traveled all the way from New York to visit us at LRVSS after being referred by .

๐Ÿ”Ž The challenge:
Cooper injured his ACL (the ligament in the knee that helps keep the leg stable), making it painful and difficult for him to walk comfortably.

๐Ÿ’ก The solution:
Dr. Pete Baia performed a right nylon suture repair, a procedure that uses a strong surgical suture placed outside the knee joint to help stabilize the leg after an ACL injury. This technique can work especially well for smaller dogs and helps support the knee while scar tissue forms and healing takes place.

โœจ The outcome:
Cooper is recovering well after surgery and getting lots of love while he heals. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ‘‰ When to seek help:
If your dog starts limping, holding up a back leg, or struggling to get comfortable after activity, it could be an ACL injury. Ask your veterinarian about a referral to www.LRVSS.com for a surgical consultation.

Zuri is a 7-year-old female Pit Bull mix who came to LRVSS after being referred by . She needed extra support for her left knee โ€” especially important because her right leg had already been amputated.

๐Ÿ”Ž The challenge:
Zuri tore the ACL in her only back leg, making it difficult and painful for her to move around comfortably. Since she depends completely on that leg for support, keeping the knee strong and stable was extremely important.

๐Ÿ’ก The solution:
Dr. Pete Baia performed a left TPLO surgery along with internal bracing to provide additional stability to Zuriโ€™s knee during healing.

TPLO surgery changes the angle of the knee so it can function normally again after an ACL tear. Internal bracing uses a strong surgical support placed around the joint to help reinforce the knee and reduce extra movement while everything heals.

โœจ The outcome:
Zuri is recovering well after surgery and already working hard on her healing journey. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ‘‰ When to seek help:
If your dog suddenly starts limping, avoids putting weight on a leg, or struggles getting up or walking, it could be an ACL injury. Ask your veterinarian about a referral to www.LRVSS.com for a surgical consultation.

A big shout-out to Animal Hospital for the referral of Raphael, a sweet 5-month-old male Lab.

Dr. Pete Baia successfully performed surgery at www.LRVSS.com to repair a tibial crest avulsion โ€” a fracture of the tibia (shin bone) where a small piece of bone is pulled away by the tendon attached to the kneecap.

Raphael is now on the road to recovery - see the before and after X-rays below.

If your dog or cat suddenly becomes lame, painful, or reluctant to use a leg after running or playing, it may be more than just a minor sprain. Ask your family vet if a referral to www.LRVSS.com could help.

๐Ÿพ Featured Patient: Luna

Luna is a 3-year-old brindle Boxer who came to LRVSS after being referred by for a torn ACL in her left knee.

๐Ÿ”Ž The challenge:
A torn ACL can make it painful for dogs to walk, run, jump, or even put weight on the leg comfortably.

๐Ÿ’ก The solution:
Dr. Phil Zeltzman performed a left TPLO surgery, which stabilizes the knee by changing the angle of the bone so the joint can work normally again even after the ligament is torn.

โœจ The outcome:
Luna is recovering well after surgery and getting lots of love from her family โ€” and from Nurse Deanna, too. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ‘‰ When to seek help:
If your dog suddenly starts limping, holding up a back leg, or avoiding stairs and jumping, it could be an ACL injury. Ask your veterinarian about a referral to www.LRVSS.com for a surgical consultation.
