🐾 Recovery Update: Moka

Talk about a comeback! 💙

Moka, a 2-year-old female Cockapoo, visited LRVSS twice this year after being referred by Complete Veterinary Care Lincoln (NJ).

In March, Dr. Phil Zeltzman performed surgery to repair Moka’s left lateral patellar luxation (LPL)—also known as a dislocated kneecap. Then in May, she came back after developing the same problem in her right knee, where Dr. Zeltzman successfully repaired that side as well.

A dislocated kneecap can cause dogs to skip steps, suddenly hold up a back leg, or have an unusual gait. Surgery helps keep the kneecap in its normal position, making the knee more stable and comfortable.

✨ We’re happy to share that Moka is recovering well after both surgeries and is getting back to enjoying life on all four paws.

👉 When to seek help: If your dog occasionally skips on a back leg, suddenly lifts a leg while walking, or seems uncomfortable during activity, it could be a dislocated kneecap. Ask your veterinarian about a referral to www.LRVSS.com for a surgical consultation.

A special thank-you to Complete Veterinary Care Lincoln for trusting us with Moka’s care. 🐾

🐾 Recovery Update

Some patients hold a special place in our hearts, and this sweet boy is definitely one of them. 💙

This 9-year-old male Domestic Shorthair cat came to LRVSS after being referred by with a left tibia (shin bone) fracture.

What makes his story even more special is that he’s cared for by AID (Animals in Distress), a rescue organization that gives homeless cats and dogs a second chance while they wait to find their forever families. This lovable boy has spent his entire life in a shelter, where he’s become a favorite among the staff and volunteers who adore him.

Dr. Pete Baia performed surgery to repair his fractured tibia, carefully stabilizing the bone so it can heal properly and help him get back on his paws.

✨ We’re happy to share that he’s recovering well. Throughout his stay, he reminded everyone just how sweet, gentle, and affectionate he is—and he won over every member of our team.

👉 When to seek help: If your cat is limping, won’t put weight on a leg, or seems painful after a fall or other injury, seek veterinary care right away. Early treatment can make a big difference in healing. Ask your veterinarian about a referral to www.LRVSS.com if specialized orthopedic surgery is needed.

A heartfelt thank-you to and AID (Animals in Distress) for everything they do to help pets in need. We hope this wonderful boy is back to feeling his best soon—and maybe even finds the forever home he deserves. 🐾❤️

🐾 Recovery Update

Age is just a number, and this sweet girl is proof of that. 💙

Lady, a 16-year-old female Beagle mix, recently visited LRVSS after being referred by for a cancerous mass on her right hip.

Dr. Pete Baia performed surgery to carefully remove the mass, allowing it to be sent for biopsy while helping keep our patient comfortable.

✨ We’re happy to report that she’s recovering well and getting back to enjoying life with her family.

👉 When to seek help? If you notice a new lump or bump on your pet, or if an existing one is growing, changing, or bleeding, don’t wait. Ask your family vet about a referral to www.LRVSS.com for a surgery consultation.

A special thank-you to for trusting us with her care. 🐾

Jinu, a cute 4-month-old Australian Shepherd, is back on his paws!
Dr. Pete Baia successfully repaired Jinu's complicated femur (thigh bone) fracture at LRVSS.
This was a particularly challenging injury.
It was a week old (which is a very long time in such a young dog), and there was a 2nd fracture going down into the knee.
Dr. Baia beautifully fixed it with 3 pins – see the before and after X-rays below.
If your pet suddenly won't put weight on a leg, don't wait, we are here to help at www.LRVSS.com.
Quick evaluation and treatment can make a tremendous difference, especially with a broken bone.
We thank our colleagues at Hershey Animal Emergency Center (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090994999574) for their trust in our specialty surgery services.

🐾 Recovery Update: Stella

Stella, a 5-year-old female German Shorthaired Pointer, recently visited LRVSS after being referred by for a torn ACL in her right knee.

A torn ACL can make everyday activities like walking, running, and getting up from a resting position painful and difficult. For active dogs like Stella, restoring stability to the knee is key to getting back to a comfortable, active life.

Dr. Pete Baia performed a right TPLO surgery, a procedure that stabilizes the knee by changing the angle of the bone so the joint can function normally again despite the torn ACL.

✨ The outcome: Stella is recovering well and is on her way back to enjoying the activities she loves most. 💙

👉 When to seek help: If your dog is limping, holding up a back leg, struggling to get up, or avoiding stairs and jumping, it could be an ACL injury. Ask your veterinarian about a referral to www.LRVSS.com for a surgical consultation.

A special thank-you to for trusting us with Stella’s care. 🐾

🐾 Guess who came to see us? 🐾🦮

Penny, a 9-year-old female Labrador Retriever, visited LRVSS after being referred by . 🦮

🔎 The challenge:
Like many Labradors, Penny couldn’t resist chasing a squirrel. 🐿️ After jumping off a porch in pursuit of her furry target, she suffered a fracture in her right front leg that required specialized surgical care. 🦮🦴🐾

💡 The solution:
Something didn't look right on Penny's X-rays. Based on the suspicion that there was cancer in the bone, Dr. Phil Zeltzman performed a right front limb amputation. While the idea of amputation can sound scary, dogs adapt incredibly well to life on three legs and can return to many of the activities they love. 🦮

✨ The outcome:
The biopsy confirmed bone cancer in the bone. Penny is recovering well and learning to navigate the world as a tripod pup. Dogs are amazingly resilient, and many surprise their families with how quickly they adjust after surgery. 💙🦴

👉 When to seek help:
If your pet has a serious injury and is unable to use a leg, don’t assume there’s nothing that can be done. Ask your veterinarian about a referral to www.LRVSS.com to discuss all available treatment options. 🩺

A big thank-you to for trusting us with Penny’s care. 🐾💛🦮

Margot, a 2 year old Basenji, dislocated her ankle while having fun in Colorado.
Confirming the diagnosis required a special X-ray called a stress view.
You can see below the big difference between a normal X-ray and the stress X-ray.
Dr. Pete Baia repaired it with 3 screwed and 2 special sutures.
She is now recovering at home.
We thank HanoverView Animal Hospital for their kind referral.

🐾 Say hello to Cooper!

Cooper is a 14-year-old male Schnauzer/Poodle mix with adorable salt-and-pepper coloring who traveled all the way from New York to visit us at LRVSS after being referred by .

🔎 The challenge:
Cooper injured his ACL (the ligament in the knee that helps keep the leg stable), making it painful and difficult for him to walk comfortably.

💡 The solution:
Dr. Pete Baia performed a right nylon suture repair, a procedure that uses a strong surgical suture placed outside the knee joint to help stabilize the leg after an ACL injury. This technique can work especially well for smaller dogs and helps support the knee while scar tissue forms and healing takes place.

✨ The outcome:
Cooper is recovering well after surgery and getting lots of love while he heals. 💙

👉 When to seek help:
If your dog starts limping, holding up a back leg, or struggling to get comfortable after activity, it could be an ACL injury. Ask your veterinarian about a referral to www.LRVSS.com for a surgical consultation.
