Two of my favorite ladies are visiting for a few days. Miss Penny has been coming to us pretty regularly for almost 2 years and Merry joined her this year. I LOVE them both. Mom says the word "Frens" and Penny loses it, she gets so excited to see us. At the drop off Mom said that Merry immediately started whining and that she has never heard her whine. Merry couldn't get out of Mom's arms fast enough to say hi!

This is the one and only reason we will shave a double coated breed. Lillie is a great Pyrenees and her coat has not been properly maintained so it has become extremely matted. This sort of matting is very painful and can only be shaved down. The risk of heat stroke, sunburn, shave shock, and skin cancer were all thoroughly explained to her owners. As well as encouraging a regular grooming schedule for the future.

Mr. Bobby had his spaw day. This dude is super sweet and probably more vocal than any of my husky clients. He tells me how he feels when I do something he doesn't love with lots of roos, and awoos, and I'm pretty sure he thinks I understand him.

Sometimes grooming isn't about a super cute plush feeling haircut. Sometimes it's about making a senior dog that's at the end of its life a little more comfortable. This guy is Ouzoz his mom was in the hospital and the people caring for him didn't exactly care for him. He was extremely matted, had a severe skin infection, severely overgrown toenails, Ouzo is blind, mostly deaf, and clearly battling age and doggy dementia. Due to being 16 and all of his other issues I went very slowly with Ouzo and this took way longer than it normally would have, but my only goal was to give this senior boy a comfortable and safe groom. I gently soaked his skin in medicated shampoo, he enjoyed the warm water, and I allowed him to kennel dry rather than putting him through direct drying. I think he appreciated the warm cozy kennel with a bed of towels while warm air blew on him because he slept peacefully while drying.

When his momma picked him up I got to see photos of how handsome Ouzo looked in his younger years in full coat next to his sister, and then she asked me what I thought about his quality of life to which I replied honestly.

I'm not just a groomer, I'm an animal lover, someone whose only goal is to love your animal like you do, a person for the owners to confide in and ask questions about difficult decisions like quality of life or proper coat care, and I love my job. I'm glad that I could give this little man a spa day.

It’s that Time of year when I’m getting many request From dog owners wanting their double coated dogs shaved down or trimmed “short” for summer or due to shedding.

For the sake of education and keeping your double coated breeds safe this summer, here are some facts about double coated breeds.

Some common breeds you Do Not shave, unless a vet has deemed it medically necessary or the dog is so severely matted that there is no other avenue- Newfoundlands, Samoyeds , Labrador retrievers, Australian shepherds, Pomeranians, Golden retrievers, German shepherds, Siberian huskies, Great Pyrenees, chows, border collie, Bernese mountain dogs, And so many more!

- These breeds are NOT supposed to get SHAVED! Please do your research if you own a double coated breed and you want them shaved down for “summer”. Years of selective breeding contributed to these breeds being double coated and their coats serve a purpose in all weather types.

-When you shave a double coated breed it is not good for their coat health or overall health. Contrary to belief shaving doesn’t keep the dog cooler, instead it strips the dog's ability to regulate body temperature, putting the dog at a much greater risk of heat stroke. Heat stroke can happen in less than 20 minutes in hot weather even with shade and water. Think of your dog's coat as insulation, this keeps your pet cool or warm as needed.

- Shaving a double coated dog increases the dogs risk of sunburn , and in conjunction increases their risk of skin Cancers.

-Shaving a dog doesn’t help with shedding- they still shed and now that the hair is shaved it turns into small pointy needle like hairs that gets into and sticks to EVERYTHING.

- Over time shaving changes both the guard hair and top coat texture causing the coat to become brittle and grow back inconsistently or not at all.

-Your dog's coat has several functions and it acts as a protective barrier, keeping the sun rays, dirt, debris, and moisture away from your dog's skin and undercoat. Removing this barrier can lead to cancers ,skin allergies, sunburn, alopecia, and more.

-Shaving your dog's coat can stop or delay the shedding process and cause skin irritation and a number of additional health issues.

So how do you keep your double coated dogs healthy, cool in hot weather , and not shedding like mad? Regular coat maintenance either by a professional groomer or at home using professional grooming products. A bath, deshed shampoo and conditioner, brush out, and thorough force drying will do all of the above. Because an impacted undercoat is as equally dangerous as a shaved coat.

Keep in mind that there are groomers that will shave your dog's down, but these groomers are of the mindset that you'll just pay someone else to do it. When they should be advocating for the health and well-being of your dog. It goes with the popular grooming industry saying of " safety and health, over vanity, always."

Bentley is a beauty school drop out. He was being groomed by someone else that started refusing to do him due to behavior. So today he came to me to see if we could get the job done. And fortunately we did! Bentley did not need a muzzle, or restraint. I went at his pace and allowed breaks, listened when he didn't want his head or feet dried with the force dryer and switched to the hair dryer which he was totally fine with and I was patient when he would give me a snarl and waited for him to understand that what I was doing wasn't scary and he also wasn't getting out of it because of his behavior choices. Once he decided that growling wasn't getting him anywhere he completely stopped and allowed me to finish the groom without complaint.

Everyone say Good boy Bentley!!! 🥳🥳

Grooming a puppy.

Grooming a puppy isn't always easy, sure they are the cutest things ever! But they are wiggly, scared of our equipment, and sometimes a little bitey. And obviously they pull at your heartstrings when they are nervous.

Meet Tucker, he's a 2lb Maltese puppy who came in very matted for his first haircut. Mom was brushing, she's just been using the wrong brush so we'll get her set up with the right stuff. Tucker was terrified of the dryer, the clippers, and he required lots of breaks, and lots of love. So, I went at his pace and gave him time to adjust. We would clip a bit, get down and snuggle, then clip some more. After a few hours he became more comfortable and we finished his haircut. Now he's peacefully sleeping in my lap while I wait for his owners to pick him up. All of this to ensure that his first haircut wasn't a stressful mess and that he could still have some positive interaction between the stressful parts.

When you're this big you get bathed in the kitchen sink, and peep that RC can to put into perspective how little he really is!
