Protecting your horses from strangles means practicing biosecurity along with vaccination. Here are some key measures you can take are:
-Not sharing water buckets while traveling
-Not allowing horses to touch noses with other horses while traveling
-Quarantine new horses for 3 weeks before introducing them to the herd
-Wear gloves when handling sick horses and practice proper handwashing

As we enter into the hottest time of the year it is important to plan your rides accordingly as horses are more at risk for suffering from heat stress. The most common way to determine if it is too hot is to add the temperature and humidity together. If the sum is over 150 the horse is at increased risk for developing symptoms of heat stress. If the sum is over 170 it is not recommended to work the horse at all.

Steps you can take to help your horse recover post work:
-Ensuring fresh clean water is available at all times
-Adding electrolytes to food or water to encourage drinking
-Rinse the horse after exercise and scrape off excess water
-If returning to a stall, ensure there is proper ventilation to aid in cooling.

Summer cookouts are fun for the whole family, but be aware of a hidden danger on your table: the corncob. While corn itself is safe, the cob can cause serious problems for pets, as it cannot be broken down in the stomach and often leads to intestinal blockages that require surgery.

To keep your pets safe, ensure they are kept away from human foods and that all foods and trash are out of their reach.

It's reported that more pets go missing on the 4th of July than any other day.
Now's the time to ensure your pet is able to be identified if lost.

Does your pet have a personalized ID tag on their collar? If not, make it your next priority to ensure your pet has a fitted collar with an ID tag displaying your name and phone number.

Make sure to update your contact information on your pet's microchip. If your pet has a microchip and it's not registered, you can visit https://www.freepetchipregistry.com/ and register for free.

Celebrating Independence Day comes with many risks to our pets. Here are some tips from the AVMA to help keep your furry friends safe this holiday season.

- Leave your pets at home! New, unfamiliar and loud places can be scary to pets.

- Don't let your pets near the grill

- Avoid feeding table scraps

- Too much sun, heat and humidity can be dangerous to pets!

- Keep horses and livestock safely secured and keep the party away from them.
