Let's talk about E/stim/shock collars. They're all the same thing but "trainers" who use these products will tell you that you are simply "communicating with your dog" and you're "using positive reinforcement" by pressing that little button. And that can't possibly be further from the truth. You are using positive *punishment*, not reinforcement. These devices do *not* reward your dog. It's basic science. They apply pain to your dog in varying degrees, despite what those those who peddle them will have you think. That's literally what they're designed to do. That's how they work. That's the only reason to use them. Punishing choices made by your dog that you dislike. Using these devices so that your dog can have "freedom" is a myth. In general, the law requires your dog be on a physical leash in the majority of public spaces and this does not qualify as such. Additionally, this so called "freedom" that you're giving your dog comes with actually *less* freedom. You are *controlling* your dog with management and the threat of pain. Your dog is not trained. Your dog is being managed with threats. True training and behavior modification teaches your dog to make quality choices. That's *real* freedom. If you took the collar off, your dog would still not be trained but he/she would be less managed. Real training isn't done under the threat of harm. Real training is done with mutual respect and relationship building. Choose real training over control and pain. Does science say that punishment works? Of course it does, at the cost of trust and the relationship. You know what else science says? That rewards based methods not only create a better trained dog, they reduce the stress of learning. Win/win. Below is my dog Kenzo, who has never known the threat of pain for a poor choice, yet all 160 # of him is trained. Choose kindness.
