Introducing Sokka 🌊

This will be a really fun little horse for someone who wants to do something different every day and go on all kinds of adventures. I just took him swimming in a river and he was a blast! Video is a highlight reel, full video is on YT.

→ 4 year old gelding
→ 14.1hh (rider in videos is 5’3”)
→ BLM mustang from Twin Peaks, CA
→ Adopted & gentled Dec 2025
→ Had his first ride May 2026
→ Green but rides english & western, off property, trail rides, attended a show, rides in a halter or bit
→ Just started over fences (video is of his 2nd jump school)
→ Catches, leads, loads, ties, lunges, ground drives, stands for baths and fly spray
→ Has seen dentist, farrier (was a bit nervous for a new person trimming him), stood well for the vet to vaccinate and pull coggins — UTD on all
→ Goes in a paddock with my geldings who are quite bossy, and he respects their authority— low man in the herd.
→ Public YT videos of his training from a wild horse just pm or look him up.
→ Barefoot, easy keeper

I adopted Sokka for a mustang competition that canceled, so I trained him at a slower pace. After gentling him he was on the back burner for a few months before I put the time into starting him under saddle.

Sokka was easy to gentle. He is playful and will be in your pocket when he knows you. Likes obstacles. Was easy to saddle train with no bucking, he is really not spooky or worried about many objects but he did take a little while to trust me to get on him. Can still be tense or watchy with quick movements on the ground or on his back and may flinch or have a little jump away. Not too bothered about new sights off property or show atmosphere.

Smooth transitions, easy gaits, good brakes & steering, really soft in the mouth and while he is more whoa than go he doesn’t require a lot of leg to get or keep him going. Leg yields walk/trot, moves shoulders and haunches, backs up softly, sidepasses, lopes off from the walk. Works gates and you can carry or drag things from his back. Freshly started over fences, he was fun and easy to get cantering a little course. He doesn’t ride much like a pony, would be a great mount for a smaller adult.

Suited for someone experienced with young horses, balanced, not nervous, who can be consistent with him or leave him in training. He is a green 4yo mustang so if he sits I don’t think he’ll do anything unpleasant but he will need a refresher to feel confident. He is a good boy and has not made me feel unsafe in any scenario.

I can see him being a really cute all arounder or going any direction. Make him your low level jumper, EXCA or mounted games horse, working equitation pony, ranch riding/ranch trail mount, eventer, trail horse, you name it. Or do something new every day of the week!

I do have the option to keep Sokka in training with me. I can put more training and trail and/or show miles on him for you or whatever you want him more solid with I can do.

Reason for listing: I gentle mustangs, start them under saddle, and find them new homes when they are ready. It’s how I make a small difference in a cause I care about.

Took some horses to a local rodeo arena to ride yesterday, and they were all fantastic but I was most proud of client horse Fuego! He has come such a long way with his ability to self regulate. Everything clicked for him when he offered to stretch down and relax instead of looking around at all the new sights, which leads him to feeling tense and uncomfortable moving out or stretching. That used to be him when he would go somewhere new or see something unfamiliar. He’s really putting everything together and getting a lot more confident letting go of tension. None of his maneuvers are all that polished yet but he has a lot of try and some really nice moments.

There’s a lot of talk about the mustangs right now, and one thing I know for sure is I believe in the mission of promoting adoptions, gentling, and placing incredible these animals in loving homes. Promoting the mustangs through these events is an invaluable part of that goal. These horses have a great effect on us as trainers and owners, and in turn each horse will experience love and care, and they may even go on to inspire more adoptions with their stories.

Mustangs have changed my life, helped me build my business, caused me to chase opportunities and brought me places I never could’ve dreamed. I’ve been able to personally adopt and gentle 17 mustangs and 3 wild burros so far and work with dozens more along their journeys. I’ve also competed with 10 of these animals so far and each one is a unique journey that teaches me more than I can say. Seeing each horse learn to trust, watching their health improve and their coat begin to shine while their personality starts to reveal is endlessly rewarding. I know they’re better off for knowing domesticity as they will want for nothing for their rest of their lives.

Lastly when I think about the mustangs who had to suffer the effects of scarcity in the wild, especially my Cinnamon who had long lasting effects of malnourishment that took a toll on her, I know that population management is necessary.

Adopt a mustang yourself, adopt one from a trainer and enable them to bring the next one out of holding, or simply support your favorite mustang trainers who are working tirelessly every day to gentle and place mustangs and burros, it all makes a difference.

Sokka’s second jump school! His first time was trotting some cross rails last week, and today we were able to start cantering jumps and even put together this little course. He found it all very easy and was quite fun. Keep an eye out for this one as he’ll be listed soon!

Eragon on ride 6 last week. Since then we’ve done some work on downward transitions, stopping and backing, and shoulder control. He’s about ready to get rocking and rolling in the arena. He has a dentist appointment coming up to get those teeth checked out so I’ll be able to start him in the snaffle soon!

No trending audio, just the sounds of Brutus’ fourth ride back after a long break. He’s probably only had about 10 rides total over the years, never consistent. I took him on this summer so it’s time for him to get going under saddle once and for all, and he’s doing great! I put him through my groundwork program which he sailed right through considering he’d done it all before— it had just been a few years, then I had to locate a saddle that would fit him and his tall withers. Once I got one he got straight to riding pretty quick however the client horses always take priority so it’s a good thing he picks right back up where I left him after a few days off if I get a little busy.

It’s been interesting getting to know him again after so long, I’ll retell his story sometime but man he has really changed. He is honest and trying to do the right thing, but he had a mental block about forward motion under saddle so it’s nice to see him getting comfortable cruising around the round pen. He’s relaxed a great deal on the ground as well. I did discover something about him, he doesn’t like having a lead rope clip moving around under his chin when he lunges, so I opted to start him in a snaffle as the split reins don’t have the same movement/weight. It doesn’t bother most horses and he wasn’t doing anything super dramatic, but letting me know it was too much movement for him. He’s pretty happy in the snaffle anyway, having ridden in it before, and since he has had regular dentistry I know his mouth is good.

🚨 I am taking a brief pause from horse training videos for an important PSA: PLEASE TAKE BURN BANS SERIOUSLY!

Everything turned out ok, no humans, animals, or property were harmed, but this could have been so much worse.

A large part of Texas is in a severe drought and a burn ban. It is very windy and dry here in the hill country right now. What people need to know is the burn ban means absolutely nothing that can cause sparks when near flammable grass! Wildfires are breaking out every day with many different causes and some are very damaging, we were fortunate this was minimal.

A spark from someone welding (who was very apologetic and helpful) started a grass fire three days ago that crossed over onto our property very quickly. I saw it happen and it was out of control before I could turn on a hose— I actually thought something had exploded at first.

We were able to fend it off important things including horse pastures, my home (it came within 5 feet), barns and shelters using hoses however it grew to a few acres before the fire department took care of what we couldn’t. With the property owner we moved horses out of pastures and got my pets from my home to safety, we were very fortunate we were there and had a friend come with an extra trailer quickly just in case.

I know there are far more serious wildfires going on in many places right now and feel for all affected. I don’t want to detract from the severity of those at all!! But please y’all let’s be very careful during these burn bans, until you see it you can never quite fathom how quickly these things spread.

Less exciting c**t starting video this time, just how we like em! Wanted to do a continuous clip, but the pivo was not tracking so we spent half the time out of the frame.

Luna is a gaited mare who came in for c**t starting two weeks ago. The plan was to get her confident moving out and then start to get more particular about which gait she’s in, and she’s unlocked all her gaits on ride 2 so we’ve got that part down! Ride one was just a little walk around and she was very relaxed, pictured here was actually ride 3 and she’s had no issues so far. She thinks loping is easier right now, but I’m just leaving her alone to develop her own balance and feel confident before I start to get more specific.

I’ve gotta say at the moment, I’ll happily take more gaited horses for starting cause she is SMOOTH!

It just goes to show you can do all the prep, and ride 1 was super relaxed, but sometimes moving up a gait just gets them a little bit. We are training feral horses to carry us after all and sometimes they can just get scared the first time! I don’t typically have these reactions but when it happens, it’s just one of those things and I know to go back and work on whatever in his groundwork could have been more solid, to help the horse feel more relaxed and confident going forward.

All in all he got a little scared, had a few horse moments, and recovered totally fine. It matches what he did when learning new things on the ground— a little panic, sometimes a bolt, then sorted it out. His next few rides have been smooth sailing, yawning and enjoying scratches, moving out into trot and lope with only a little hesitation but no explosions. I’m proud of him because he doesn’t always move past things easily but he was willing to trust me on this, that it wasn’t going to be that scary again going forward.

I’m looking forward to sharing the full videos to YouTube. Reminder that social media is just the highlights, and while I post the not so pretty stuff too, it’s important to see it in context as well. Eragons doing really well with his groundwork and we have a good relationship built on trust, but sometimes flight animal has gotta fly!
