Degenerative Myelopathy in Dogs

Degenerative myelopathy (DM) is a progressive neurologic disease that affects the spinal cord and gradually leads to weakness in the hind limbs. Early on, it can look very similar to other conditions like back pain, arthritis, or intervertebral disc disease, which is why a thorough evaluation is important.

Certain breeds—including German Shepherds, Boxers, Corgis, and several others—are at higher risk. A genetic test can help identify dogs that carry the mutation associated with DM and can be an important part of the diagnostic process.

While there is no cure, supportive care can make a meaningful difference in quality of life. Rehabilitation exercises, acupuncture, mobility aids like carts, targeted supplements, and in some cases regenerative therapies can help dogs stay active and comfortable longer.

Our patient Floyd was recently diagnosed with DM, and we are working together on a thoughtful, collaborative plan that includes acupuncture, therapeutic exercise, and a mobility cart to help keep him moving and enjoying his days. Even with challenging diagnoses like this, there is often a lot we can do to support comfort, mobility, and quality of life. 🐾
