Productive farm day. CIDR’s pulled from some girls, and placed in others while we copper bolus and hoof trimmed the rest.

It ain’t fancy cause fancy doesn’t work around here, but today Avery and I built a new shelter for the goats in the dry lot/breeding pen. Next up, new hay feeders

If you’ve ever wondered the difference in dam size and litter size, here you go.
The doe on the left was from a much more dairy, smaller bodied doe and was 1 of 4.
The doe on the right is from a much deeper bodied, bigger doe and was a set of twins.
The doe on the right is 2 weeks older. Same sire.

We were able to get some updated pictures of Cade’s Lil Farm Thackery Binx this weekend. He’s a little over 2 and has really developed this year. He developed a little bit too much and is overheight 😂 but we don’t mind.

It may be 95 and feel like 105, I may be tired and sore from working in the barn, and I may complain about the time, money and effort it takes to raise healthy thriving goats, but seeing this out my bedroom window makes it all worth it.

When we moved to Alabama 3 years ago, we had a hard learning curve with the importance of copper bolus. Because we were dumb, we ended up losing our 3 bucks that made the move with us from Illinois to barber pole all over Thanksgiving weekend. (Happy 1st Thanksgiving in your new home.)
When we started looking for new bucks, my husband had one request: “I want a Little Tots Estates Ranger kid” so we went to Ann Hirsch Alecock of Two Dogs Farms who all our foundation does came from. She had Two Dogs Farm R SocialDistance available and we decided he’d be a new buck for us. He already had some kids on the ground and met the requirements we were looking for.
We brought him home in July of ‘22 and couldn’t be happier. We’ve taken him to 5 shows since we’ve had him and he’s brought home ribbions everytime. And yesterday and the Alabama Dairy Goat Classic, he finished and won Best of Breed!
We can’t say thank you enough to Ann and the kind of animals she breeds. What she has accomplished in her herd is what we hope to do one day! Thank you for trusting us with SD! He’s a pretty special guy here!
