Born to Track

Born to Track Books on tracking wounded deer and teckels (wirehaired dachshunds) bred & used for this purpose. Joh Our kennel name is "von Moosbach-Zuzelek".

Born to Track is owned by John and Jolanta Jeanneney of Berne, NY. We have been breeding standard wirehaired dachshunds out of European hunting bloodlines since 1968. These "teckels" are bred and used for tracking wounded big game such as deer, bear, moose and elk. We are co-founders of Deer Search, North American Teckel Club and United Blood Trackers. We have authored and published two books "Tra

🎉 Happy 13th Birthday, Thor! 🎉
You are the most accomplished dog we’ve ever bred, and it’s truly incredible how much you've helped hunters recover their wounded deer over the years.
A huge thank you to Bob Yax—not only for all the tracking work, but for the deep love and dedication you’ve shown Thor throughout his life.
I’m sharing an old collage of Thor’s recoveries from 2019, since I simply can’t keep up with all the amazing work you two continue to do.
Sadly, Thor’s littermates Theo and Tuesday are no longer with us, but they are remembered with love today too. 💔🐾
Here’s to Thor—still going strong at 13! 🦴❤️

Even though I no longer breed Teckels, I still love receiving updates about dogs from my breeding ❤ Just a few days ago, Boone (Isaac von Moosbach-Zuzelek) became a father to three pups—two boys and a girl. The mother, Bren von Lowenherz (FC Harley Hooper vom Bienenwald SCN × FC Uschi von Lowenherz), and Boone (Yukon von Moosbach-Zuzelek × Odette von der Dohlmühle) are both accomplished tracking dogs. They are owned and loved by Jason Pollack and Megan Given Pollack of New York.

I have retired from breeding, but it is great to see that some of the teckels from my breeding continue to produce quality offspring. Recently, five pups were born with "von Moosbach-Zuzelek" dogs on both sides of the pedigree. On March 4, Willette Brown's FC Delilah von Moosbach-Zuzelek, aka “Dilly,” had three boys and two girls. Dilly is the 2024 DCA National Field Trial Winner, and she is out Odin von der Dohlmühle and Xena von Moosbach-Zuzelek. The sire of the litter is Sherry Ruggieri's FC Keszitő a Keleti Tűz, TKI, BCAT, CGC, UBT1, who comes from an exceptional breeding of Zale von Moosbach-Zuzelek "Aldo" to FC Tüsöksori-Ugrasztó Husniya, ROMX "Niya". We are thrilled!

Yesterday I saw Bob's post: Thor's recovery this morning was one I could have never imagined 13 seasons ago when he found his first deer at the age of 5.5 months…
Today, Thor had his 500th recovery ! 🦌 494 Deer & 6 Bear
Back in 2012, Thor recovered 11 deer and I thought that someday he could hit 100 - Man ! did underestimate him.

This is an amazing accomplishment and makes Thor the most successful teckel we have ever bred. Thank you Bob for all your hard work, your passion and dedication ❤❤❤ Thor, we are so proud of you!

We’re in the middle of tracking season, and book sales of Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer have picked up. In October alone, I sold over 100 copies. Thank you to everyone who has recommended the book to friends, fellow trackers, and hunters.
I have a question for you. The last update to the book was in 2019—a small modification about the legalization of tracking. The prior update, in 2016, was much more substantial. Some things have changed since then. Do you think it would be beneficial to do another update? Of course, a large part of the book would remain unchanged, as it includes John’s writing, but new factual information could be added. And don’t worry about me 'ruining' the book; I did the last two updates with John’s input.
So, please answer:
1. Should the book be updated—yes or no?
2. What new topics relevant to blood tracking should be covered?

I am way behind posting about born-to-track teckels and their tracking adventures, but this message came today and I couldn't resist. This is from Wyatt Tolles who tracks with Tuck (Buck von Moosbach-Zuzelek): Tucks 100th recovery!! LOVE my boy. 🦮🐻🦌 Thank you again for a VERY SPECIAL pup. 😘
I am so happy for Wyatt. Huge congratulations! Tuck is out of Odin and Xena, and he is a littermate to Brownie and Bindi.

I got this picture of Harry and Freddie from Mike Lafleur and Joanne Greer. And then a message from Lindsay Ware, Large Game Blood Tracking came. It made my day!

"Hi Jolanta, you may already be aware of this, but you have FIVE Von Moosbach-Zuzelek dogs (plus very close relative Fritzi) heading north today and tomorrow to track moose for Maine guides and hunters! Harry, Viva, Freddie, Aldo, Juniper, and Fritzi (and their humans, of course) are all being supported by Maine guides to stay the week in remote moose hunting areas and help hunters.

Susanne and I were recently talking about how John once lamented that Maine guides had not caught on to using dogs to recover moose, as it was being used so successfully in Quebec. That prompted me to reread the section in the book about this, and I liked the quote, “sooner or later, the guides and outfitters in northern Maine will try the crazy idea of using a leashed tracking dog for finding moose for their clients.” Thanks to you and John, here we are! ❤️ Hopefully we will all have lots of moose photos to send you this week!"

Thank you guys so much. You don't know how much it means to me. Best of luck to all of you and I am really looking forward to reading about your adventures ❤🐾🫎

Congratulations, Lindsay! It’s so rewarding to see Aldo and Juni doing what they were bred for and excelling at it. Aldo’s high recovery rate is truly impressive, and I’m thrilled for your hunters and guides. Juni will be tracking her own bear in no time, and I know she’s ready for the challenge. Wishing you continued success and many more fruitful tracks this season! ❤🐾🐨

I was so happy to learn that two born-to-track teckels passed their UBT II tests at the Northern Michigan trackers meet up. The first picture shows Renee Bickar with Elmer von Moosbach-Zuzelek and the second is of Wyatt Tolles with Tuck (Buck von Moosbach-Zuzelek).
A big thank you to Renee and Wyatt for their dedication to the sport and all the training and tracking they put into the dogs ❤🐾🦌

I don’t know who decided that today is National Dachshund Day, but I have some pretty dark thoughts about the breed that I am going to share.

The day started with a phone call from a man who is getting a teckel puppy in a few weeks from a breeder not familiar with deer tracking. The dam of the litter is registered with the DTK, but not the AKC, while the sire is registered with the AKC. Since the caller is only interested in deer tracking and not breeding, he is not concerned about the puppy's lack of registration with either the AKC or the DTK.

To register a puppy with the AKC, both parents must be AKC registered. If imported teckels are going to be used for breeding in the United States, they need to be registered with the AKC too (easy to do) so their offspring is eligible for the AKC registration. Currently, it is impossible to produce DTK teckels in North America because the DTK withdrew its support for the North American Teckel Club.

It's a shame that so many dachshunds/teckels are being produced in this country without any proper registration/documentation. Maybe we should call them rescue teckels and ask for a lot of money.

When John and I started the North American Club (a DTK group) in North America, we never expected that breeders would not register their imported dogs with the AKC and promote these unregistered dogs as "superior." Unfortunately, it has happened, and uninformed puppy buyers are falling for it.
