Pretty cool story!
“I was born and raised on this farm. I'm 71 years old, have milked dairy cows for 46 years and started a buffalo herd 23 years ago with three animals just to see if I liked them. After a year I really liked the animals and wanted to pursue a bigger herd, so I bought nine more heifers. Now I have a herd of 125. They eat grass, green beans and drink a lot of water. I don’t feed them grain. The buffalo learned to survive on the Great Plains without man’s interference. When you start throwing in the corn part of it, sure, they'll grow faster, and you'll get bigger animals quicker, but you also changed the quality of the meat. Who helps me with all this? Just me and my two dogs, a border collie and a little rat terrier, but they don’t come up to the buffalo herd. That’s a disaster waiting to happen. The animals, they recognize my voice. They don’t know anybody else’s. I had a fella that wanted to help. He was with me on a four-wheeler, and we were far away from the herd, but we have an old gal out here. Her name is Evelyn, she’s a heck of a cow, but she’s very aggressive. She spotted us and she came clear across the field and didn’t look like she was going to stop until I jumped up on the seat, like a great big grizzly bear and yelled at her. She slammed on her brakes. Then I realized she wasn’t looking at me. She was looking at the guy sitting next to me. She wouldn’t back off so I finally got him across the field, had him crawl through the fence. He had to come all the way around the woods. After he left, no problems, but she did watch him the whole time.”
(Note from Humans of Oshkosh: We met this awesome human at his Berlin farm right outside Oshkosh. We weren’t aware that our cars caused distress to the bison who were moving from one part of the field to another. We had to give the giant animals their space.
