Morgan County West Virginia Animal Control This page provides information on lost and found dogs, ordinances, and laws relating to Morgan County, WV. With limited staffing, we do not allow "walk-ins".

Our office hours are typically from 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday. If you are inquiring about adoption, reporting a lost or found dog, or for other general inquiries during the week, please call (304)-258-6363. For emergencies after hours and during the weekends, you will be directed to our dispatch center. An officer is available 24/7 for emergencies only.

Adoptions: adoptions are made by app

ointment only. All adoptions must be pre-approved via an adoption application. If you are interested in submitting an application for a specific dog, please email [email protected]. If you are unable to fill out the adoption application via email, please call our office and we will schedule a time for you to fill out the application in person.

Owner surrenders: when space permits we do accept owner surrenders. We are essentially a "no-kill" shelter, with less than a 3% euthanasia rate per year. A surrender fee of $75 is charged per owner surrender, especially in cases when the pet is unaltered and not vaccinated. Owner surrenders are by appointment only. Please contact our office if you wish to surrender your pet.

Cats: Unfortunately we do not generally pick up "stray" or feral cats. We make special accommodations for extremely ill or very injured stray cats when possible, and facilitate rescue pull or euthanasia if necessary. If you have a question about whether we can help with an ill or injured cat, contact our office. For healthy stray cats, or owner surrender cats, please contact a local cat rescue or the humane society.

Sweet Bailey still needs placement!

We were told she is an Australian Cattle Dog/Labrador mix (probably some other breeds thrown in there, too!)

Bailey has tested okay with other dog friendly dogs here at the shelter! We don't know how she will do with cats.

She would do okay with older kids in the home, but was returned because she wasn't doing well with the small children in her previous home. Herding dogs herd. At times this may come across as "nippy" or "bossy". Sometimes there's no getting around getting around genetics. Bailey is very submissive and respectful in general, but we were told she is pushy when it comes to small humans.

Bailey is a very sweet girl that deserves the best forever home!

She is already spayed and current on her initial vaccines!

If you're an adopter or rescue interested in Bailey, please reach out to us!

Meet Yara!
Please share! 🐾❤️

This sweet girl was found as a stray and never reclaimed.

Yara was understandably confused and unsure at first, but she warmed right up to our staff!

Yara came in with another dog. We haven't had a chance to extensively test her with other dogs, but she's been non-reactive toward the other dogs in the kennels!

So far Yara has had very appropriate energy for her estimated breed and age. She has not been destructive, and has been generally easy going!

Yara is a young dog. We'd guess she's right around a year! She would still need a family devoted to giving her lots of mental and physical enrichment. She likely wouldn't be content to laze around on a couch or in a kennel all day.

This beautiful girl appears to be a German Shepherd, although she came in with a younger Belgian Malinois. Yara could be a variation of a Belgian Shepherd/German Shepherd cross.

If you're a rescue or savvy adopter interested in Yara, please reach out to [email protected] or call our office at 304-258-6363!

The Easter Bunny hopped on in early to visit the shelter dogs here at MCAC! 🐰

Enrichment is SUPER important for any dog, but especially those in shelter environments.

Today we held an Easter Egg Hunt for the dogs here at the shelter. They enjoyed sniffing out eggs full of yummy treats! 🐣🥚

We have lots of great dogs here looking for their forever homes! Give our office a call at 304-258-6363 for more info!

7 month old German Shepherd needs placement!

Freya is still here! 😢💔

We don't understand why! This girl is GORGEOUS! 😍❤️

She's had PLENTY of interest. However, once we mention that we have an adoption procedure and she will be spayed we get crickets... 🦗

All of our dogs are placed in FOSTER to ADOPT homes. We DO NOT offer same day adoptions. This allows us to ensure its a good fit for the dog and their new family. It also gives us time to finalize any necessary vet care (like their spay or neuter, which is legally required by law). Once the dogs are sterilized we then complete the adoption and transfer ownership. The whole process takes around two weeks and we try to make it as "easy" as possible!

We understand some of the folks that have inquired about Freya live hours away, and it's likely not realistic for them to accomodate a foster-to-adopt process. Some of them lose interest when they find out they have to fill out a (simple) adoption application. Some have lost interest once we've told them she'll be sterilized.

Unfortunately we see some pretty heinous cruelty and neglect, so our adoption policies and procedures are in place to keep our dogs SAFE!

Freya is a young dog with LOTS of potential.

We love her dearly, and we know her forever home is just around the corner! 🐾

Freya can be a spitfire, but we have been working on basic obedience. She isn't 100%, but is making strides to become a great K9 companion. She LOVES toys. She does well with other dogs that tolerate her energy and rough play.

She likely wouldn't be the best candidate for homes with very small children or cats. She is not aggressive, but will likely chase a cat and is "too much" for most young children. She has done well with older kids. Overall she is a super friendly and affectionate girl that likes making new friends!

She does need a family that can keep up with her energy level. Freya does well romping around the yard, or having regular walks. Once she gets her energy out she's content to go back to her kennel or find a nice spot to lay down in the yard. She doesn't need a family that runs a marathon everyday, but she does need someone that recognizes she is a young energetic dog.

If you're an adopter or rescue interested in Freya, please reach out to [email protected] or call our office at 304-258-6363 for more info!

Meet Nala! 😍❤️

We might be a little obsessed with this girl (if you couldn't already tell!)

Nala came to us as a stray and was never reclaimed (we don't get it!) Nala may have been on the run for awhile. We received reports that this girl had been seen on and off a week or so prior to us bringing her into our care. This poor girl was COVERED in ticks (which we have since treated her for with topical prevention).

She is such a happy and affectionate girl. It's hard NOT to fall in love with her big, sweet, brown eyes or absolutely adorable smile!

Nala loves nothing more than cozy-ing up and getting plenty of pets and belly rubs! She is SO grateful for any attention she gets.

She greets people very gently, and isn't your typical "bull in a China shop" Bully Mix.

We haven't had a chance to test Nala with other dogs yet, but she greets them very nicely through the kennels. She has been completely nonreactive since she's been in our care!

We are hopeful someone else will fall in love with this cutie just like we have!

If you're interested in Nala, please email [email protected] or call our office at 304-258-6363!

Meet Bailey! 💜🐾

Bailey might seem familiar to some of you. She was originally adopted from us as a younger puppy. Unfortunately her family dynamics changed and she was brought back to us at the beginning of the year. At that time the family regretted bringing her back, and chose to reclaimed her.

Unfortunately Bailey has not done well with the small children in the home, and is seemingly worse since the family dynamics changed.

We were told Bailey is an Australian Cattle Dog (Red Heeler)/Labrador mix. Unfortunately herding dog mixes aren't usually the best fit for homes with mini-humans. Their instincts to "herd" kick in which can result in small children being unintentionally hurt or scared.

We have noticed that Bailey can be nippy at times. We've only noticed playful and excited nips, mainly aimed at other dogs. She is very easy to correct! She is a young dog (around 2 years old) and has appropriate energy for her breed mix and age. She can be a little excitable and exhuberant, but we find this is a situation easily remedied with a little bit of exercise and physical enrichment. A good romp in the yard and Bailey is ready to relax!

We have been assessing Bailey over the last week to determine how to place her. She has been super friendly and outgoing! We have had no issues with this girl. Although she has tested well with smaller children at our facility, we will NOT entertain a home with small kids for Bailey. Older kids should be okay! We want Bailey's next home to be her forever home!

She has done well with other dogs, and appears to be dog tolerant. She has mainly tested with male dogs. If you have another dog you will have to bring them in for a meet and greet! We don't know how Bailey will do with small animals like cats.

Bailey does well on a leash and okay during car rides.

She is spayed and current on initial vaccines.

If you're interested in Bailey, please email [email protected] or call our office at 304-258-6363!

It's National Animal Control Appreciation Week!
💛🐾

We are SO incredibly thankful for our wonderful Animal Control and Humane Officers. They consistently go above and beyond to serve ALL members of our community (including the furry, feathered, and scale-y ones!)

It is often a thankless job, and our ACOs regularly shed literal blood, sweat, and tears to help those in need in our county.

Be sure to thank your local Animal Control Officers this week!

Lots of folks were worried for this sweet girl. She came to us a stray in poor shape.

She has really blossomed in our care the short time we've had her here.

Hera has rescue commitment and is leaving tomorrow!

Thanks for everyone that advocated for this girl. We can't wait to see her thrive in the future!

This is the sweet girl that was found on Sleepy Creek Mountain off of Shanghai Road.

We received a couple different reports that callers previously spotted her in the Cross Junction area last week.

We did notify Frederick County, but they don't have any reports for this girl.

If you recognize her, please call our office at 304-258-6363!

Lucy is really starting to come around! 🐾💜

Unfortunately she's no where near ready for adoption yet. 😢

🐾👉🏻Lucy still needs a RESCUE commitment!

Lucy came to us after both of her human parents passed away. The family could not care for her. Only one person in the family could "handle" Lucy, and she was unable to take her.

Lucy is a medium-sized "Doodle". We think she's likely an Australian Shepherd/Poodle Mix. She is around 4-5 years old, and around 30 pounds. We were told she was spayed, but not current on vaccines.

This poor girl is severely undersocialized and scared of everything. Unfortunately her fears and anxiety manifest as reactivity. Lucy is avoidant for the most part, but will growl and react if she feels like she needs to.

For the first couple weeks Lucy was in our care, we gave her a wide berth. We let her know we were "safe" people, offered lots of gentle talks, and gave her plenty of treats.

This week we took a chance and let Lucy hang out with us in the kennels off-leash. She has taken to following us around, but will quickly run back to her kennel if we try to initiate contact with her. Sometimes she will come up to us and offer us quick sniffs. She will take treats from us and let us give her quick pets through the kennel (her designated "safe" space.)

Lucy is not feral, but puts us in mind of some of the feral and semi-feral dogs we've worked with in the past. This is the sad reality of not socializing your pets properly.

The even sadder reality is; we're not sure Lucy is going to make it out of the shelter. As much as we have grown to love Lucy, we must be realistic. We cannot, and will not, warehouse her here. She has no quality of life here. Lucy needs a rescue that has the resources to give her the socialization and TLC she needs to thrive.

It has been difficult enough for us to find rescue placement for our behaviorally sound dogs. Shelters and rescues are so overburdened. We are not hopeful Lucy will find the "unicorn" rescue or foster she needs.

Lucy is not a "bad" dog. She has so much potential, and we feel in the right environment she will be a wonderful companion. Several years ago we wouldn't have had a difficult time finding a dog like Lucy commitment, but this is the current climate of the "rescue world" post Covid.

We are hoping for a miracle for Lucy Doodle!

Are you that miracle?

If you're with a rescue that is willing to help Lucy, please reach out ASAP!

📢📢📢We have until the end of the month to find Lucy placement!
