Unfortunately our home was right in the path of the Rogers storm system early Sunday morning. We are ok but we are still dealing with clean up and no power. All sessions are cancelled until power is restored- once restored we will be sending out a link to everyone who needs to reschedule to be able to do so. Reception is very spotty right now as well- if you have any questions please direct them via email.

Summer is here folks 🥴

Even this early in the year temps can be dangerous to you and your pup. Stick to early morning / late evening walks or opt for relaxing in shaded areas during the day.

We see it every day. This is the easiest way to damage your dogs trust and increase likelihood of being hand shy or aggressive with out-stretched hands. Also does nothing to decrease the problem behavior in the first place.

If you clamp your dog's mouth shut when they mouth or "tap" them on the muzzle when they bark, or use your hands in any way to stop behavior, how is your dog supposed to know the next time you reach to pet them that you are just reaching to pet them and not to "tap" their muzzle?

Using these physical methods in training is one of the quickest way to teach your dog that people reaching towards them is something to avoid and they should cower or run away or that they should defend themselves against people by growling, snapping or biting, to prevent the person from touching them.

Training should be you and the animal tackling the problem, situation or environment together not you against the animal.

Instead of seeing the situation as a problem, many trainers will blame the animal. If you are always trying to “win” against the learner, you’re constantly setting them up to lose/fail. As a team, you should both be ‘winning’.

If you are always in conflict take a step back and investigate how you can become teammates instead of adversaries.

CW: Article about toddler fatality/dog mauling (Dalmatian) Link to article in first comment and at the end of my comments below. Some quotes/commentary below.
"Normally, (the dog) would play," said Juan Sanchez, who identified himself as the great grandfather of 1-year-old Lennox. "They used to ride him, we don't know what happened. The dogs were friendly."

I think I know what happened. I think the answer is right there. They used to RIDE HIM. This is NOT OK.

We have so far to go with public education and outreach. As Family Paws Parent Education says "Sit on the ground, not on the hound."

Of course this is incredibly sad for this family, but this very likely could have been avoided. I only wonder how much this dog put up with before this incident happened.

What body language was this dog giving off that was being ignored time and time again? How many times did he ask the adults for help with his eyes or his body weight shifting or his ear position and just got ignored? Or worse, punished for growling or asking for relief?

Dogs put up with a lot, until they don't.

We need to do better to keep kids and dogs safe and to help them learn to be safe together.

We should NEVER expect a dog to tolerate a child riding them. EVER.

If you are expecting or have a toddler and need help navigating this challenging times, please reach out and schedule a session.

When we punish dogs for growling, we aren't helping them feel better about whatever it is that is threatening them. Instead, we are teaching to stop letting us know when they feel unsafe.

The result? A dog who stops giving us warning signs and "bites out of the blue."

And, that's how we create dangerous dogs.
