A lot can change in a year.

A horse can mature.

A rider can improve.

A program can grow.

Confidence can be built. Experience can be gained. Goals that once felt completely out of reach can suddenly become realistic.

That’s why I’ve never put too much stock into a single run, a single weekend, or even a single season.

This sport has a funny way of rewarding the people who keep showing up, keep learning, and keep working long after the excitement wears off.

The long game has always mattered more to me than any one result.

Keep doing the work.

You might be a lot closer than you think.

This sport exposes excuses fast.

You can blame ground, draws, setups, pressure, luck, trainers, veterinarians, farriers, entry numbers, or whatever else makes you feel better for a little while… but eventually the truth catches up.

The competitors that keep improving are usually the ones willing to look at themselves honestly first. That applies to riding, business, and life.

Accountability isn’t always comfortable, but it’s usually productive.

You can’t ride distracted and expect elite results.

Big goals require a level of focus that a lot of people don’t talk about. Not just in the arena, but outside of it too. The mental side matters more than people realize.

The horses feel everything — tension, frustration, pressure, confidence, doubt. If your energy is scattered because you’re too busy watching drama, comparing yourself to others, or worrying about outside opinions, it usually shows up somewhere in your riding too.

The older I get, the more I realize successful people protect their peace before big moments. They stay focused on their horses, their program, and their goals instead of getting pulled into noise that has nothing to do with their future.

There’s a difference between being aware of what’s around you and allowing it to consume your focus.

The goal is simple:
Keep improving.
Keep learning.
Keep showing up.
Let the work speak louder than distractions ever could.

There’s definitely pressure that comes with chasing big goals, especially heading into big shows and opportunities you’ve worked hard for. But every now and then I try to stop and appreciate it too.

Younger me would’ve thought this life was pretty cool — a barn full of horses to ride, big weekends to prep for, goals that still scare me a little, and the chance to keep improving at something I love. It’s easy to get caught up in the stress, the schedule, and always wanting more, but there’s a lot to be thankful for in the middle of it too.

Now it’s time to finish cramming for VA and hope the weather cooperates. 😂🤍

A big thing I’ve learned over the years is that improvement is way more addictive than attention.

Attention fades fast. Opinions change daily. People will cheer for you one weekend and criticize you the next. If that’s what motivates you, this sport will wear you out mentally.

But getting better? That part never gets old.

Feeling a horse get more confident. Fixing small mistakes. Making cleaner runs. Learning to ride smarter. Building a program you’re proud of behind the scenes when nobody’s clapping yet — that’s the part that keeps me motivated.

The goal was never to impress everybody. The goal was always to build something real.
