What a blessing it was to know you Ms. Sandra Matthews. I enjoyed our visits down to the last one. You were easy to love. Easy to talk to. Easy to miss.
You were nurturing to the smallest and weakest of God’s creatures. You will forever hold a special place in my heart.
I’ll think of you each time I catch myself talking to myself, or I make your creamed corn spoonbread, or I fuss at the girls at the office for not keeping my flowers watered, or you’re not there to give instructions to a client about how to care for a three day old kitten. Each time I look beside me and see Fanci snuggled up next to me and think about that last kiss she snuck in when we came to say our goodbyes and that yuck face you made.
I’ll think of you each time I go to Zaxbys or walk by those oranges you loved. Zinnias - you grew beautiful Zinnias and I loved when you brought a mason jar of them to the office.
I’ll think of you when someone slips and calls me Dr Blackmon instead of Dr Windham. The old name just stuck with you.
I’ll think of you when the next person asks me what perfume I wear and I tell them how it’s one of your scents that became mine. I’ll think of you when I see Mary post photos of Cal and Merryn and think of how you’d light up when you talked about them and how you loved being their CoCo or how proud you were of what a good cook “John” was.
I never got used to you calling him John after I’d called him Doc my whole life. You loved your people. You loved your pets. I’m forever grateful that you became someone so special to me.
It’s not goodbye. It’s see ya later.
