Are you looking for a way to get your horses on cows?
To learn the art of cow work?
Or to begin your journey toward competing in the fastest growing equine sport in America — Ranch Sorting?
We are proud to unveil our Progressive Introduction to Cow Work & Ranch Sorting Lesson Program — a refined, systematic pathway designed to take you and your horse from foundational biomechanics to confident, composed performance in cow work and the sorting pen.
At Double Helix Horsemanship, cow work is not simply a maneuver — it is an art form. A conversation between horse, rider, and cattle built on trust, precision, timing, and feel.
Introducing horses and riders to cattle is never rushed. It is cultivated development.
For that reason, all horses and riders new to cow work are required to progress through Tier 1 and Tier 2 of the program before being introduced to live cattle. This structured progression ensures a safe, confident, and educated experience for both horse and rider — building understanding before intensity, and feel before speed.
This is not exposure.
This is preparation.
Now offered in very limited spots with limited scheduling exclusively at Double Helix Horsemanship in Bend, Oregon.

Here is how it works!
**Tier 1: Foundation & Feel Lessons: This stage builds the physical and mental tools necessary for success in the next phases.
We begin with the fundamentals. In this phase, horse and rider develop softness, correct positioning, and the foundational maneuvers required for cow work.
Our focus is on:
• Biomechanical positioning for both horse and rider
• Body control and maneuver development
• Timing and feel
• Foundational horsemanship principles
**Tier 2: Mechanical Cow Integration- The mechanical cow bridges the gap between foundational training and live cattle work.
Once you and your horse demonstrate proficiency in foundational maneuvers, we introduce the mechanical cow.
This controlled environment allows us to:
• Refine cow work maneuvers
• Improve accuracy and timing
• Develop confidence without unpredictability
• Fine-tune rider cues and horse responsiveness
The mechanical cow bridges the gap between foundational training and live cattle work.
**Tier 3: Live Cattle Introduction Lessons
After demonstrating consistency and confidence on the mechanical cow, we transition to live cattle.
In this phase, you and your horse will:
• Learn to read cow behavior
• Develop real-time decision-making skills
• Apply positioning and timing under dynamic conditions
• Build confidence working in a true cattle environment
This is where preparation meets instinct.
