Ever wonder if an "English Golden Retriever" is its own breed?
They are actually the same breed as an American Golden Retriever. BUT they are held to a different breed standards. The breed standard that was written by the Kennel Club in England. Which is why they are called English Golden Retrievers. There are a couple of differences between these two beautiful styles of Goldens.
The main difference that everyone talks about is their color. Did you know that Goldens in Europe can actually be quite dark? Maybe not as dark as some American Goldens, but the English breed standard does allow for medium shades of Golden. The American standard, however, specifies that they should not be too light. Which is why you see the lighter Goldens in the English style. There are several other slight differences in the breed standard, making different styles of the same breed. There is even a third style! Canada also had their own breed standard.
See link in Bio for full blog post.
American, English, and Candian styles of Goldens each have their unique characteristics, which is your favorite?

Foundation Friday ๐Ÿ› A breeding program must have a good foundation, with specific goals in mind to contribute to the improvement of the breed and the quality of pets the program produces.
A very important element of our breeding program is health testing. We want to do all we can to produce healthy puppies that don't develop avoidable health issues. A major health concern with golden retrievers is hip dysplasia. According to OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) almost 20% of Goldens that are tested have hip dysplasia. This leads to expensive surgeries and treatments and sometimes means a shortened lifespand.
The most common screening for Hip Dysplasia is through OFA. A board of Veterinarians from OFA will review X-rays taken of the dogs hips. They then grade the how the hip ball fits into the socket, and give a rating. Other hip tests include the UK's BVA tests, Europe's FCI tests, and German's SV test.
There is another test called PennHip. This is a less popular amounst breeders, because of its cost and complexity. This tests is slightly different and tests for the joint laxity. hips. The scoring for this test is a bit more complicated too. Each dog is given a number based on the amount the ball is out of the socket. This number is then referenced with the dogs size and breed average and given a percentage. While OFA and PennHip are looking for slightly different things, when both tests are preformed you can have even more confidence in the strength of your dogs.
At Kenwood we take hip dysplasia very seriously. We require all the dogs we breed to be given a high score from OFA and PennHip. Since a lot of our dogs come from Europe or have European ancestors, we also take into consideration European tests when selecting dogs to breed.
