With summer upon us and more children outside, the Avalon PD will be paying close attention to safety traffic violations in Ben Avon. Intersections are hazardous for kids on bikes & scooters. After a period of public reminders & warnings, enforcement is stepping up to help keep our streets safe for everyone. Please slow down, remind family members in cars, bikes & scooters to stop at intersections, stay alert, and drive responsibly. Thank you for looking out for your neighbors

A new Pennsylvania law, known as Paul Miller's Law, takes effect on June 5, 2025, banning the use of handheld devices while driving, even when temporarily stopped. This means that drivers cannot hold their phone or other devices while driving, even at a red light or stop sign.

Please see more information about this law in links below.

STORM UPDATE - MAY 5

Good morning, and hope more people have gotten their power back. Thank you to the crews, first responders, and local staff/leaders who have worked tirelessly to get us back to this point.

Progress continues in restoring power. Duquesne Light reports a little over 20,000 customers remain without power. This includes a little over 2000 in Allison Park and Gibsonia in Hampton Twp. There also is an area in Emsworth on Upper Locust and on the river side of Ohio River Boulevard that is still out. Estimated Time for Restoration for Route 8 between Wildwood and the 76 interchange as well as Thomas Drive off of Sample Road is this evening. The Estimated Time for Restoration for Upper Locust is also this evening. Everything else has an Estimated Time of Restoration tomorrow night, but as always, power restoration will likely occur sooner.

Major roads and schools in Avonworth, Hampton, and North Allegheny are open. McCandless, Franklin Park, Ohio Twp, Kilbuck, Ben Avon, and Ben Avon Heights have small outages remaining.

As mentioned yesterday, I am back in Harrisburg for legislative session. I will try to respond to Facebook messages, but it may be more sporadic. My office will open at 9am. My staff can be reached at 412-348-8028 today to assist with further issues.

This will be my last global update pending any other changes that I do not expect. My sincerest sympathies to all who have struggled during this significant storm. My staff and I will continue to advocate for a full recovery and policy changes to build resiliency and a more rapid response to future storms.
