Yay, summer is approaching! And so are the hot temperatures 🥵☀️
Walking your dogs in the heat can be dangerous so here are some ways to help keep them safe and happy. 🩷
1. Check TEMPERATURES before you go.
Most dogs tolerate up to 70 degrees well. With increasing humidity, the “feels like” temperature may be 5-10+ degrees warmer.
*** Exception - brachycephalic breeds, especially BULLDOGS, do NOT do well in the heat!!! They are actually 14 times more likely to get heat stroke than a Lab 😕. Keep them inside!
2. Check ground temperatures =
7 SECOND TEST - hold back of hand on surface (e.g., pavement) for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws 🐾
3. Bring WATER 💧!!! Portable water bowls work great for walks.
4. Take SHORT walks with more SHADE if possible in EARLY morning or LATE evening. Avoid midday walks when it’s the hottest.
5. Instead of walking for distance/speed, allow your dog to do a “sniff walk”. Let them guide you (within reason) to stop frequently and smell the roses ☺️
6. Have playtime in the AC or in a pool in place of a walk. My George loves the pool!!!
7. Know the signs of HEAT STROKE
*Excessive panting (especially at rest)- one of the 1st signs, if we can identify at this point, we can save their life!!!
*Drooling
*Vomiting
*Diarrhea
*Weakness/Incoordination
*Collapse
*Seizures
If heat stroke is suspected, get your pet in a cool environment, offer water, and cover in towels soaked in cool (not cold) water. We want to gradually lower the body temperature to avoid dangerous blood pressure changes. Then take to your veterinarian/local ER immediately for advanced medical support.
Let’s save the hot dogs for the ballpark! 🌭⚾️
George livin’ his best life 🩷
