Here is a cautionary tale for Monday! Poor Rutger's guardian came home to find that this bone chew was wedged around his lower jaw. Luckily, under sedation, we were able to remove the offender without cutting and no teeth were fractured during the experience. Rutger's human would never have guessed that the bone could have fit around this bog boy's jaw, but dogs are great at surprising us!
We do not recommend bones for chewing for this reason, as well as because they can also cause dental injury and fractures. It's also important to never leave your pet unattended with chews they cannot safely swallow. If you want good dental chew suggestions, we recommend reviewing the options approved by the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council).
Rutger is lucky to have a dedicated guardian who tries to provide a variety of enrichment and also saw that he was in distress and sought care right away. This was a great outcome for all!

It's Pitbull Awareness Month and we think everyone should be aware of Floyd and how cute he is!
Did you know that "pit bull" is not actually a breed?!
There are several different breeds that are often called "pit bulls" for ease of conversation. This term is used as a catch-all for several different breeds and mixes who all share a genetic history, kind of like how beagles and bassets are both "hounds" but are recognized as different breeds.
Because so many different dogs are call pit bulls (terriers, bulldogs, etc) it's important to understand that looks are only a small part of who your dog is. Dogs are often mislabeled as pit bulls and stereotyped against.
We are huge fans of velvet hippos and the many varieties of bully and terrier breeds often falling under the pit bull moniker.
