Happy (almost) Halloween! How cute are these patients (and our own Dr. Cheeks) in their spooky costumes? While Halloween brings a lot of fun, it also brings some important reminders for pet parents. Candy, although tasty for us, is not a suitable treat for our furry friends. Many forms of candy contain toxic ingredients like chocolate and artificial sugars. One common artificial sweetener is xylitol also labeled as “birch sugar”. If your pet does get into something that they shouldn't, please reach out to us immediately so our medical team can determine if it is an emergency. You can also call ASPCA poison control at (888) 426-4435. Remember to keep your pet in a safe, confined space or room when trick or treaters are visiting to avoid any accidental escapes. Wishing you all a safe, spooky Halloween!

Today marks World Rabies Day. We are sharing an article regarding a bat from Mountlake Terrace that unfortunately tested positive for Rabies on September 25th. Two people are known to have offered water to this bat. If you or someone you know has had recent contact with a sick bat call Public Health Services which can be reached at 206-296-4774 or seek immediate medical attention. Pet owners, make sure to check your pet's Rabies vaccination expiration date to ensure they are protected. Please call us for an appointment if your pet is not current on their Rabies vaccine!

Hi, my name is Freeway! I was rescued from… you guessed it, a freeway! A kind police officer put me in her car and brought me to safety. I am currently being fostered by the clinic, and although I am loving my time here I am searching for my fur-ever home! I have received medical care and have recently been neutered, as you can see I still have a minor scrape on my nose but the team here says it is healing up quite nicely. I love snuggles and sitting on laps and am hoping to find my person. Could you be my new family? I will be ready for adoption starting Monday 9/29. For inquiries about me, you can reach out to the clinic via email or phone or ask reception about me.

September 28th is World Rabies Day, which was first started back in 2007 and designed to bring awareness to the Rabies virus and its impact on humans and animals. Rabies is a virus that invades the central nervous system causing neurologic signs and ultimately becoming fatal. According to the WHO an estimated 59,000 deaths occur every year worldwide from Rabies. Did you know that any mammal can be infected with Rabies? Rabies vaccinations are a legal requirement for all dogs, cats and ferrets in the U.S. The Rabies Virus is 100% fatal but can easily be prevented through proper vaccination and safety measures. Rabies is transmitted via saliva into a bite or open wound. Protect you and your furry friend, if your pet is overdue for their vaccination, schedule an appointment today! Our clinic chooses vaccines that partner with the Afya Program which donates Rabies vaccines to countries in need, to date they have donated over 7 million vaccines across the world! So you can feel good about the difference you are making not only for your animal but also for others!

September is Happy Cat Month! Did you know that our feline companions are more likely to suffer from a urethral blockage/obstruction than our canine friends? A urinary blockage occurs when something like crystals or cells partially or fully obstructs the urethra; this can be due to a number of causes. A blockage is life-threatening so it is important to know what to look out for. Signs of a blockage include distress, straining when urinating, urinating frequently with little output, crying during urination, excessive licking of ge****ls, blood in urine and inappropriate urination (outside of the litterbox). If you notice any of these signs in your kitty, don’t hesitate to call and we can help you determine the best course of action for your furry friend! For more information on urethral blockage as well as information on feline lower urinary tract disease visit the AVMA website at https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/pet-owners/petcare/feline-lower-urinary-tract-disease

Today is rainbow bridge remembrance day, it is a day to honor and celebrate all our furry friends no longer with us. Today some may choose to remember their pets who have passed by sharing favorite photos or memories of them, others may choose a quieter self reflection, there is no wrong or right way to process grief. If you or someone you love is struggling with suicidal thoughts or a mental health crisis following the loss of a pet, call the national suicide/crisis hotline at 988 or the suicide/crisis textline which can be reached by texting “HOME” to 741-741.
