Today is World Parasite Prevention Day! Parasites can be internal, meaning they inhabit internal parts of our pets such as the gastrointestinal tract or the heart, or external meaning they live on the outside of the body such as fleas and ticks. It is important to keep your pet on parasite prevention year-round! Our veterinarians recommend all pets should be on heartworm prevention. Did you know heartworm is transmitted via mosquitos? Some internal parasites can be transmitted from pet to owner, so you are not only protecting your pet by keeping them on prevention, but also protecting yourself and family! It is also important to always pick up after your pet defecates as intestinal parasites are spread through f***s in the dirt our pets walk on. Even small parasites like fleas can be dangerous, as they act as an intermediate host for tapeworms and can–in severe cases–even lead to anemia. Many available prevention treatments protect your pet from fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites and heartworm! Give us a call and we will get your pet started on it.

This week is poison prevention week! Do you know the common toxins for your furry companion? Common toxins include grapes, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, onions, garlic, lilies, xylitol, rodenticides and avocado. If you are unsure if something is safe for your pet, don’t hesitate to give us a call! Some good practices include keeping medication, commercial cleaners/chemicals and toxic foods out of reach of your fuzzy friend. If you are concerned your pet has ingested something they shouldn’t have, call ASPCA poison control at (888) 426-4435 immediately and give us a call so we can see your pet for emergency medical attention. Happy (early) Holidays to all who celebrate! Reminder if you have guests coming over to celebrate, keep your furry friends safely contained inside. While the holidays bring a lot of festivity, it also brings some hazards to our beloved pets. Tinsel is sparkly and fun (and makes a great photo-op as demonstrated by B-Dawg!), but is dangerous in the event of ingestion, supervise curious pets around holiday decorations. Not all holiday foods are safe for our furry friends, some common toxins include chicken bones, garlic, onion, xylitol (sometimes labeled as birch sugar), chocolate, alcohol and caffeine. If you aren’t sure if you can share something with your pet, give us a call to find out! Keep a lookout for our post tomorrow on our Holiday hours/closures.

Happy (almost) Thanksgiving! We are so thankful for our lovely patients and their families who care for them as well as our wonderful medical team who makes caring for your animals possible!

Thanksgiving brings a lot of tasty food, but not all of it is safe to share with your furry friends. For some safe and low-calorie options for your canine companion consider feeding plain cooked carrot, canned pumpkin, green beans or blueberries in moderation as a yummy snack. For our feline friends try feeding cooked carrot or canned pumpkin in moderation as a special treat. Some common foods we find tasty are often toxic or dangerous for our fur-babies, avoid avocado, chicken/turkey bones, garlic, onion, chocolate, xylitol, alcohol and caffeine. If you are unsure if something is safe to feed your pet, give us a call and find out!

We will be closed Thursday the 27th as well as Friday the 28th. Saturday the 29th we will be open for technician appointments and prescription pick up from 9 AM to 12 PM. We will resume normal business hours on Monday, December 1st. In the event of an animal emergency when we are closed, we recommend the following hospitals: Bellevue Veterinary Emergency and Specialty- (425) 553- 4988, Animal Emergency & Specialty - (425) 827-8727, Blue Pearl Kirkland - (425) 823-9111, Animal Medical Center of Seattle - (206) 204-3366, Veterinary Specialty Center - (425) 697-6106, and Timberline Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital - (206) 828-6868.
