Halloween is a fun time of year for many, but for pets it can be stressful and even scary! (pun intended)
Follow these tips to keep your pets safe this Halloween. π
Hide the Treats - Keep the candy bowl in a location where your pets cannot gain access. Chocolate and artificial sweeteners can be toxic to pets, and eating any type of candy can cause GI issues like vomiting, diarrhea, or even more serious illness.
Say no to Pet Costumes - Unless you know for sure your pet will be ok, we do not recommend costumes. They can inhibit vision and/or cause stress for your pet. Pets that are feeling stress may try to bolt.
Trick or Treaters - Put your pet in a closed room during Trick or Treating hours when there is loud knocking and doors opening. Give them food and water, soft music or a TV on, low lights, and a closed door. This will help ease any stress, but will also prevent escape.
Leave your Pet at Home - Instead of taking your pet out with you, leave them at home in a safe space using the tips above. Pets can be scared by all of the unusual sounds, lights, and strange costumes on the streets, and the possibility of escape increases with stress.
Triple Check Pet ID and current photos - As a "just in case" prevention, ensure your pet has an ID tag with current phone numbers, and a microchip should the worst happen and they accidentally escape. It is also always a good idea to be sure you have current photos for social media lost pet sites.
