I haven’t posted anything in a couple days, due to the emergency rescue we did regarding a hoarding situation. We received a phone call regarding a few parrots who were kept in deplorable conditions…one of the worst cases I’ve ever seen in over 46 years!
A couple of these birds will probably be euthanized, depending on what our Veterinarian recommends.
The cages looks like they haven’t been cleaned for years and one of them had at least a 4 inch stack of f***s on the bottom. No newspaper or bedding, and one of the cages didn’t even have a tray.
The blue ringneck has a huge tumor on its back and most of its upper beak is gone.
The sun conure, “Sprinkles” is in good shape, but needs some work to tame down. It’s not aggressive… just scared of humans. I don’t blame it, after what it’s gone through.
The miracle bird is the sulfur crested cockatoo. “Sunny” jumped right onto my arm and has not stopped talking and preening me! Cockatoos are very needy and loud birds, and this one seems like it was just craving attention.
None of these birds can be visually sexed, so we have no idea what their genders are.
We were told there might be another 50+ birds in this house!
There’s nothing we can do about it, until we receive another phone call.
Please don’t recommend calling the authorities, because we don’t know where these birds are located. A man contacted us after having rescued these three birds.
Unfortunately, he was tired of taking care of them short term, and had them sitting outside in the freezing rain for us to pick up.
I wasn’t sure if the cages would fit in our van, and he said there’s no F-ing way he’s taking them back in. Our impression was he would have just left them outside to perish.
Upon returning to our sanctuary, we realized that these cages could not be salvaged, so we went and acquired three brand new cages for these neglected birds.
The pictures don’t show how deplorable the situation actually was. The water dish in the second to last picture is exactly the way we found it. Barely any water on the bottom with some kind of slimy buildup. There was no water dish in with the conure, nor the cockatoo. The last photo shows all the dried f***s on the underside of the blue ringneck’s tail.
After examining the Ringneck, Misty and I both broke out in tears. No animal should have to live like this. As I’ve said for decades, no pet in the world asked to be with you. They have no choice and only hope humans can take care of them the best way possible for their entire lives.
Sorry to vent, but we see so much neglect and abuse in our line of work. Not every rescue turns out in the way we hope.
Unlike most other rescues, we are not begging for help nor asking for donations…just venting in the hopes of making people realize that these animals depend on us to care for them.
