Teach Less. Wait More. Learn Faster. 🐾
One of the biggest secrets in dog training isn’t how you teach…
It’s when you stop helping.
After you show a behavior, reward it, and practice it a bit —
give the cue… and wait.
Yes, they might get it wrong first.
Yes, it can feel slow.
But that moment where the dog thinks, tries, adjusts, and finally chooses the correct behavior?
That’s where real learning happens.
When dogs solve the puzzle instead of being guided every step, the behavior isn’t just reflex — it’s understood.
And understood behaviors generalize everywhere.
Struggle → Adjustment → Success = Stronger neural connections.
Fewer repetitions.
Smarter responses.
Sometimes the fastest way to teach…
is to pause. 🐕‍🦺✨

Our end of the year graduates have kept us busy and proud! 🐶 🎓

Congratulations on completing the board and train program not only to these pups, but to their committed families. Their dedication to making changes and gaining knowledge has improved their communication and set them up for long term success. Through private sessions and the board and train program, these clients and pups are off to very bright futures! We love seeing these happy and confident relationships reunite at graduation 🤎

Aggression is self-rewarding.
Science shows it in mice: they’ll seek out aggression even when it’s punished.
We see it in people: outrage, pile-ons, moral attacks — all highly rewarding.
We see it in dogs: growling, barking, guarding — control feels good, so it repeats.
Aggression isn’t learned. It’s innate.
What’s learned is when and how it gets expressed — and whether it gets reinforced.
The danger isn’t aggression itself.
The danger is using it in the wrong context, especially in the name of “justice.”
Sometimes what feels righteous…
is just aggression activating the reward system.
In dogs, punishment alone isn’t enough.
Rewards alone aren’t enough.
Management + guidance + accountability matter.
Same goes for us.
Aggression helped us protect what mattered.
But unchecked, it stops being justice — and starts feeding itself.
Control it. Channel it. Don’t let it control you.

Why dogs “test” you after training
There’s a common pattern we see after obedience training.
First, dogs learn the behaviors.
Then they learn to perform them in different environments.
Early on, motivation is high—clear rewards, clear follow-through, clear expectations.
But over time, something shifts.
Rewards fade.
Standards loosen (sometimes without us realizing).
Follow-through becomes less consistent.
That’s usually when dogs start pushing boundaries.
We often see this happen: • Around 3 weeks after training
• Again around 3 months later
By then, your dog knows the commands—but motivation and accountability have dropped.
Two things matter most:
1️⃣ Motivation Don’t eliminate rewards completely. Random reinforcement works best when the reward still matters. A surprise high-value reward can bring back effort and enthusiasm. If your dog used to come running and now strolls over, motivation has changed—and performance will follow.
2️⃣ Accountability If you correct your dog and they don’t seem to care, the message isn’t meaningful anymore. One or two clear, meaningful consequences are far more effective than constantly nagging at low intensity. Nagging builds tolerance. Clarity builds urgency.
At the end of the day, training isn’t just about commands—it’s about how your dog feels about listening.
Dogs perform when they care.
Keep rewards desirable.
Keep expectations clear.
Stay consistent.
That’s how good behavior lasts.
