We’ve been quiet because we’ve been busy. I’m very excited to announce that MAC Horsemanship has a new home! We are now very graciously housed at The Horse Barn in Norridgewock, Maine! You asked for more lesson opportunities and now we’ve got them! Same program, a beautiful new home! We’re getting settled and the girls are getting ready for new riders! A very sincere thank you to Sierra and the crew for all of your welcoming hospitality and support while we continue navigate our set up. Keep your eye out for lesson packages and haul in dates!

Fall lessons are now being offered at the Pond View Arena in Albion. We’re going to start with Sundays and if needed will add more days. All lessons are haul in on your own horse. We start this coming Sunday the 22nd and will go through the end of October.
Message the page or Melissa McPherson White to schedule!
As always I’m available one day a week at JC Horsemanship in Plymouth by appointment.

A couple months back we posted a raffle for a local young equestrian who was headed for NBHA Youth World Show. Shortly before she was set to leave for Georgia, her horse experienced some medical issues. She made the responsible choice to withdraw from this opportunity and keep him home and start the lengthy process of getting him vetted. I’m incredibly proud of her decision to pass up the chance to compete nationally and put her horse first. While decisions were being made we were unsure how to proceed with the raffle. In the end we decided to put the raffle money we had so far collected on her farrier account, freeing up some of her funds for vetting, and we will proceed with drawing a winner for the raffle. The raffle has not been filled so the winner will receive the equivalent amount of farrier work for what was raised.

I hope everyone can agree that such mindful horsemanship deserves a hand up and congratulate this young horsewoman on her responsible decision. We wish Melanie and Highly all the best in his retirement and we’re very excited for her to step out with her young prospect next season!

In light of the tragic events at the Beutler Ranch, I feel like this is important information. We use Triple Crown products at MAC and I did take the time to verify on their website that this information is accurate.

I’m a little disheartened by our horse community today. A woman from out of state was inquiring in a Maine based group about the horse scene in Maine. Particularly the ranch versatility discipline. She also has a breeding program that she’d like to continue here.
The responses from the “horse community” were disappointing. A lot of “don’t come here” and “There’s only small local shows”. Excuse the manure out of me but… We have seven weekend long shows that have ranch classes and one of them is a whole show dedicated to ranch. Some of those “local shows” have riders and trainers who have competed successfully with note on a regional and national level who still support the routes they came from. There are facilities and associations in this state that have fantastic programs and series that exist outside of your personal backyard.
If you’re not part of the community that’s doing the things and going places and trying to GROW, maybe you should be.
If you’re not part of the answer, maybe you should not complain about the problems.
Please, for the love of all things horse in this state, stop telling people who could bring MORE value to the industry here in Maine not to come here. We need them here. I NEED THEM.

Bonbon took a trip with her friends to uncle Jake’s yesterday to see the vet. She also got a good scrubbing, which she enjoyed quite a bit in the heat. She’s going to a show this weekend and she usually travels with her two friends everywhere she goes. They’ve been together for years and sometimes separating them can be a challenge for Rie. When we loaded up to head home, Bonbon stayed for a sleepover with Jake so she can become more independent and confident without depending on her best friend for bravery. The report last night and this morning is that she’s quite content with her comfy stall and will go out where she can see the other horses later when her turnout is shaded.

The moral of this story is that it’s a good thing to have friends you can count on when you need some help in a situation that you’re unsure of but that help shouldn’t prevent you from being brave enough to face the situation on your own going forward. It should encourage and empower you. That doesn’t just apply to horses.

So what exactly do you do?

That’s the question that someone asked me a couple weeks ago that caught me off guard. I was standing in a barnyard sipping a margarita that the property owner had handed me at the last appointment of the day. I thought about it for a couple seconds and then I realized that it really depends on who you ask and why you’re asking. That person was asking me about me though. I gave a blanket answer.

I do some training, teaching, rehab, farrier stuff and a little nutrition consulting.

What kind of training? What do you teach? What kind of horses do you have?

Once again I struggled to answer. Why? It sounds either a little silly or a lot like being full of crap if I answer, honestly.

Hi, I’m Mel and I love horses. I don’t just love them, I’m fascinated by every idea I can think of and piece of information that I can consume concerning the horse.

What’s your thing though?

Horses are my thing. All the breeds. Every size. All the disciplines. I want to do it all and have tried and been mediocre at most of it. Some things I’m really good at and others I can get by with. A few, I won’t be trying again. My bucket list is short now. There’s a couple of things left I wish I could try before this body calls it a day.

Well, what do you have for a horse?

That answer gets even more silly. The Andalusian I do mostly liberty with? Or my filly who’s bred for ranch work? How about my appy, she’s the best trail horse I have! Or my Arabian, I’m thinking about taking her around some barrels this year. The spicy Shetland mare that I spend so much of my time grooming? You want to hear about the warmblood I’m hoping to bring home this summer? I’ve been dreaming of a draft mare that I can take to weekend plowing parties with potluck dinners with the draft horse club. My western pleasure horse is retired and i might breed her next year for a replacement. I don’t have good answers here. I didn’t know we had to choose. I just do the next thing that brings me joy and some days that’s around a barrel at oh $hit speed and some days that’s piaffe, half pass and change rein.

Ok then what do you teach?

What do you want to learn? I ride the same no matter what horse I’m on or the tack involved. I do my best work on the ground at the end of a lead rope or standing in the middle of an arena doing my very best to speak life into the human/horse relationship or with a hoof in my hand. I’m not sure what I teach. I am sure that I want to share with others everything that’s been shared with me and all the cool ideas that I’ve come up with to build a road to communication with the horse. I can get you started on almost any path you want but I can walk with you for a long distance on the road to listening to your horse. I’m not sure what that’s called. It doesn’t matter what tack you show up with or what breed of horse you dress up in that equipment. I’m going to listen to it just the same as the horse before it and the one after it.

So, if you’re looking for classical training then, yeah, I’ve got that. A bunch of it. But you’re going to learn an awful lot about your horse and how to appreciate his idea of what’s happening while you’re getting that classical training program because if it’s not about the horse, it’s not for me.

What do I do? Horses. All the things that light up my soul about horses, that’s what I do.
