π We know you love DNA craziness as much as we do. How's this for some interesting news!?!
βββ Non-littermate siblings βββ
1οΈβ£ In January, Jack and his littermates, along with two senior dogs, came into our care when their owner was incarcerated. The puppies were extremely sick with parvovirus and we didn't know if they'd make it. With round-the-clock care by our team and the puppies' incredible fosters, plus a lot of luck, the babies survived and are thriving! All have been adopted into wonderful homes.
We shared a social media post asking for guesses on Jack's breed, and we got all sorts of responses, including Pit Bull, Labrador Retriever, Boxer, Husky, Jack Russell Terrier, German Shepherd, and even Chihuahua!
Check out his results. Did you guess correctly?
2οΈβ£ Fast forward to April. A litter of puppies was found abandoned on the side of the road in a plastic storage bin and brought to HSMC.
The same person who fostered Jack also fostered this litter, and she noticed a lot of similarities between the two. Could they possibly be related??? She sent in Wiley's DNA to find out.
The answer is YES!
They are very closely related and likely share a parent.
π While this is interesting data, it also highlights a challenge.
Through our Last Litter program, we accept puppies into our care and mom is spayed and returned home, thereby ending the cycle of continued litters. We also offer services for the dad, if the father is known.
Since these puppies were either seized or found abandoned, their parents are unknown, and we were not able to offer spay/neuter services for those parents. Thus, the cycle sadly continues.
πΎ These shared DNA results remind us how important our role is. With your support, we will continue to rescue abandoned animals while working hard to offer assistance to pet owners.
We believe that affordable spay/neuter services is one of the best ways we can have an impact on the well-being of our community's pets, and we are committed to growing our availability for these services.
Your gift of any amount is appreciated.
