National Pet Bird Day was launched in 2019 by the Bird Enjoyment & Advantage Koalition (yes, it is spelled with a K to create the acronym BEAK). BEAK as a non-profit organization uniting bird product manufacturers and association that focuses on promoting responsible bird ownership.

Most windows filter out the beneficial UVB rays birds need. Even if your bird’s cage is near a window, this does not mean they are getting full spectrum lighting. During warmer months, you can bring birds outside for at least 20-30 minutes 2-3 times per week for sunbathing (always keep your bird supervised and safe!). In the winter, use UVB lighting near your bird’s cage. The length of exposure time and distance from your pet will depend on the bulb being used. Provide a UV gradient so that your pet can move away from the light if desired. Talk to your avian veterinarian for more information on the benefits of full spectrum lighting and how to provide lighting safely to your bird.
