My vet's wife (and vet tech) shared this today. A puppy I sold years ago had to have part of it's bowel removed due to rawhide chews (I believe he was about 1.5 years old when it happened). He had swallowed a small piece, which damaged his intestine as it moved, like a shard of glass would!
They are pretty, but truly not a good treat or toy.

🚫🐾 Please Don’t Buy These for Your Dog — Even at Christmas 🐾🚫
I know they look festive. I know they’re everywhere this time of year. And I know they’re often marketed as a “special holiday treat” for dogs.
But rawhide chews and rawhide-filled stockings are dangerous, and no amount of holiday packaging changes that.
Here’s why these products should never go home with your dog:
❌ Choking Hazard
Rawhide doesn’t break down easily. Dogs often swallow large pieces that can get lodged in the throat or digestive tract.
❌ Blockages & Emergency Surgery
I’ve seen too many dogs rushed to the emergency vet with intestinal blockages caused by rawhide. Some don’t survive. Some require expensive, invasive surgery.
❌ Chemical Processing
Most rawhide is heavily processed using harsh chemicals, preservatives, and sometimes bleach. It’s not food — it’s treated animal hide.
❌ Digestive Issues
Vomiting, diarrhea, pancreatitis, and stomach pain are common reactions, especially in seniors and puppies.
❌ Not Regulated Like Food
Many of these products are imported and poorly regulated, meaning you often have no idea what’s actually in them.
The truth is: dogs don’t need rawhide to be happy — they need safe enrichment.
🎄 Safer alternatives include:
✔️ Bully sticks
✔️ Filled Kongs
✔️ SmartBones
✔️ Greenies
✔️ Single-ingredient chews made in the USA
If you’re gifting something to a dog this holiday season, please choose safety over convenience — and education over marketing.
Your dog trusts you with their life.
Let’s protect it. ❤️🐶
