Happy 4th of July from your friends at WellHaven Pet Health!

Here are 5 tips for you and your pets on this holiday!

1. Keep pets indoors: The loud noises and bright lights of fireworks can be extremely frightening for pets. Make sure to keep them in a secure and quiet room inside the house.

2. Create a safe space: Set up a cozy and comfortable area for your pet to retreat to if they are feeling overwhelmed by the festivities. This could be a crate or a favorite hiding spot.

3. Drown out the noise: Turning on some soothing music or white noise can help drown out the sound of fireworks and make your pet feel more at ease.

4. Avoid taking pets to fireworks displays: Even if your pet is usually well-behaved, the loud noises and crowded environment of a fireworks display can cause them to panic or potentially get lost in the chaos.

5. Update identification tags: In case your pet does happen to escape during Fourth of July celebrations, make sure their ID tags are up-to-date with current contact information.

Welcome to the WellHaven Family! Dr. Kivi will be working as an Associate Veterinarian at Animal Care Center.

Dr. Cord Kivi was raised in the Kittitas Valley in Central Washington. He was involved in 4-H throughout middle and high school, and helped his dad move hay for clients. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Eastern Washington University before being accepted into the class of 2021 at the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine.

Cord worked as a wildland firefighter for five summers with the Department of Natural Resources on an engine crew to help pay for college. He met his wife in vet school and followed her to western Washington after graduation. They enjoy going out fishing, hunting, camping, and horseback riding and share two and ¼ horses (one is a mini), two dogs, and three cats.

Dr. Kivi is passionate about his career in veterinary medicine and strives to continue to learn as medicine continues to evolve. He works diligently to provide the best possible care for his community and has a special interest in dentistry and soft tissue surgery.

First Aid
Be prepared for pet injuries. Just like us pets may experience minor injuries over the course of their life. Always remember that first aid should be immediately followed by a trip to your veterinarian.
Be sure your pet is microchipped, keep information on your pet’s vaccination and exam status handy, and have your veterinarian and emergency veterinary hospital contact information readily available. In the event of possible poisoning, you can contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435.
A basic first aid kit for your pet is similar to those used for humans. Include items like rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, milk of magnesia, latex gloves, a re**al thermometer, a muzzle, gauze pads, and medical adhesive tape. Be sure to know the purpose and proper use for all items in your pet’s kit. A well-fitted muzzle is a good idea too. Pain may cause your normally friendly pet to act out. Should you be scratched or bitten you will of little use to your pet.
