I'm making this post here on my business page because there is a chance of contact with dogs to the deer.
Heads up to the community in royal Pines on Lady's Island and surrounding areas. We encountered a sick deer this morning and it has had run-ins with myself and three of my neighbors over the last 48 hours. One encounter was it walking up to my husband as though it was a domestic animal. Another was being unaffected by a charging golden retriever. Another was slamming into a neighbor's iron fence. And my encounter was it trying to jump over a wire fence getting hung up doing a somersault and landing on its back neck. I called DNR and spoke with an officer there and it is highly likely that it has blue tongue disease. It is a fast-acting virus that is caused by being bitten by infected gnats and midges. It does not transmit from one deer to another, and it does not transmit to other animals. It is something that split hooved animals like goats, cows, sheep, deer and pigs are susceptible to. I have attached a link that he suggested I read up on to understand the virus better. He also said if there is an increase in numbers let them know they will come and euthanize and perform necropsies to discover if there is anything else going on besides that. He also said refrain from trying to Aid as this will bring you in contact with ill wildlife. Just best to let it find a place to bed down and pass. The article I read said that some animals will recover within a couple of weeks and some will pass shortly after Contracting the virus. Things to look out for our red puffy eyes, mucus from the eyes, nose, and mouth, lethargy, irregular erratic behavior, disorientation, and poor body condition. There is no known cure. Either the animal's body will recover or it won't.
