Here’s what veterinarians actually use instead:

Your dog’s SIZE matters most:

small and medium dogs (under 50 lbs): senior at 7-10 years
large dogs (51-90 lbs): senior at 5-8 years
giant breeds (90+ lbs): senior at just 5 years old

Epigenetics:

UC San Diego researchers studied how dog DNA actually changes with age. turns out dogs age super fast in their first two years, then slow way down. a 1-year-old dog isn’t like a 7-year-old human. they’re more like a teenager.

The last 25% rule:

Vets consider a dog “senior” when they hit the final quarter of their breed’s average lifespan. a French Bulldog (avg 9 yrs) becomes a senior at 6.75 years. a Beagle (avg 12.67 yrs) not until 9.5.

Is your dog a senior? Comment their breed and age below!

We recommend learning this acronym:

D - Disorientation (getting lost in familiar places, staring at walls)
I - Interaction changes (less social, doesn’t greet you like before)
S - Sleep-wake cycle disruption (restless nights, sleeping all day)
H - House soiling (accidents despite being house-trained)
A - Activity level changes (less playful, repetitive behaviors)
