🚨 ANIMAL ABUSE ISN’T ALWAYS SOMETHING YOU CAN SEE 🚨
I need to say something that has been heavy on my heart.
I will NEVER understand how anyone can abuse an innocent animal.
And when I say abuse, I’m not only talking about the kind that leaves visible scars.
Sometimes the scars are in their behavior.
A dog that flinches when you reach toward them.
A dog that runs away when your voice gets louder.
A dog that shakes because they don’t know what is about to happen.
A dog that cowers when you move too quickly.
A dog that is constantly watching your hands and your body language because they have learned that people aren’t always safe.
Those things tell a story too.
Animals are going to have accidents.
Puppies are going to p*e on your floor.
Dogs are going to chew something they shouldn’t.
They might tear something up.
They might bark when you want them quiet.
They might get into the trash.
They might test every ounce of patience you have some days.
THAT IS PART OF OWNING AN ANIMAL.
If you cannot control your temper when an animal behaves like an animal, then please do not get one.
They do not understand why the person they trust suddenly becomes angry and scary.
And what absolutely breaks my heart is that most of them will STILL love you.
They will still come back.
They will still want your attention.
They will still want to curl up beside you.
They will still look at you like you are their whole world.
Animals are innocent. They depend on us for food, shelter, safety, comfort and love. We are supposed to be their safe place.
If you ever reach a point where you cannot handle your dog anymore, THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS.
Call the breeder.
Rehome the dog responsibly.
Ask family or friends for help.
Contact a reputable rescue.
Find someone who can give that animal the patience and love it deserves.
There is absolutely NO excuse for taking your anger out on an animal.
And please understand something else.
Doing the right thing sometimes means admitting that you are no longer the right home for that animal.
I would have a thousand times more respect for someone who called me and said, “I can’t do this anymore. Please take my dog back,” than someone who kept that dog in a situation where it was frightened, neglected or mistreated.
Give them back.
Let somebody else love them.
Let somebody else show them that hands are for petting, voices can be gentle and home is supposed to feel safe.
You do NOT have to leave a physical scar to leave a scar on an animal.
And you do not deserve an animal if you are going to make that animal afraid of you.
Dogs give us so much while asking for so little in return.
Food.
Water.
Safety.
Patience.
And love.
That is the bare minimum.
If you can’t give them that, please give them to someone who can.
Every animal deserves to know what it feels like to be safe. ❤️🐾
